We already have laws that keep permits out of the hands of felons and other high risk pools of people.   I would also support a federal level centralized concealed permit registration, or even better, a federal level concealed permit that is valid anywhere in the United States - solves both problems at one time.

I thought I was checked at the Fed level to get one.

You were probably run through a centralized law enforcement database - which most likely included FBI databases.  It depends on your state laws though and whether they include "shall issue" language.  How long did your background investigation take?

You were definitely run through a federal database when you purchased your gun though.

Think it was a couple of weeks before I received the card, fingerprints were taken.

Need to correct this a little bit.  There are some states where certain gun permits, such as a concealed carry permit, exempt the individual from a federal background check when purchasing a firearm.

Pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 922(t)(3), 28 states issue permits or licenses that exempt the holder from the federal background check requirement at the point of sale.22

Alabama (concealed weapons permit issued on or after 8/1/13)
Alaska (concealed weapons permits marked NICS-Exempt)
Arizona (concealed weapons permits)
Arkansas (concealed weapons permits issued on or after 4/1/99)
California (“entertainment firearms permits” only)
Georgia (concealed weapons permits)
Hawaii (permits to acquire and licenses to carry)
Idaho (concealed weapons permits)
Iowa (permits to acquire a handgun and concealed weapons permits)
Kansas (concealed weapons permits issued on or after 7/1/10)
Kentucky (concealed weapons permits issued on or after 7/12/06)
Louisiana (concealed handgun permits issued on or after 3/9/15)
Michigan (licenses to purchase a pistol and concealed pistol licenses issued on or after 11/22/05)
Minnesota (permits to carry issued on or after 8/1/14 expiring on or after 8/1/19)
Mississippi (concealed weapons permits, but not security guard permits)
Montana (concealed weapons permits)
Nebraska (handgun purchase certificates and concealed handgun permits)

Mine took about 15 minutes - filled out one form, gave them two forms of photo ID.  PA is a "shall issue" state, even though our previous Attorney General (now in jail) tried to unilaterally change that.  Guess which political party she was affiliated with?

Another benefit of a federal level concealed carry permit would be that those permits would then be recognized on military bases throughout the United States.  Our service members, obviously well trained with firearms, should have the ability to defend themselves whether on base or not.  If they can protect our country and citizens with weapons, they should be able to defend themselves and their families.

Vermont is the only state that is actually in compliance with the Constitutional requirement of "shall not be infringed", as far as concealed carry is concerned.

https://www.buckeyefirearms.org/shall-issue-may-issue-no-issue-and-unrestricted-states

"Vermont alone, requires no permits or licenses to carry concealed, for neither a resident nor a non-resident. Vermont has no law either for or against concealed carry. In the absence of law prohibiting concealed carry, it is legal in Vermont."

Edit - Just realized you might have been alluding to a centralized gun registration system and not a centralized CC permit registration system.  A centralized gun ownership registry is a non-starter for most law abiding gun owners.  It leads to gun confiscation and any argument you make that it doesn't is invalid.

So let's do it, centralized permit registration!

I would not oppose the creation of a federal concealed carry permit database. The states already have that, but it should be at the federal level when the new national CC reciprocity act becomes law early next year. That is what you are talking about, right?

So you could 'upgrade' your CC to be Federally recognised?

Cool.

If it allows me to travel from NC to CA without breaking any laws while carrying a Federal CCW then I am all for it. I have literally tried to get a CCW twice here in Los Angeles County and was denied each time due to "You do not have a sufficient need to have one", when I stated in my application that I wanted to protect myself and my family.  But this is LA County where you can't get a CCW unless you fall into one of the three following catagories:

1. Rich and/or Celebrity

2. Friends of the Sherif

3. Donate heavily to the Sheriff's campaign

All of this is true if you don't believe me. All the while the counties surrounding us issue them all day every day. My coworkers in Riverside, OC, and Kern Counties all carry concealed when in our work trucks due to bears/wildcats and tweakers.

He usually does I am sure on that. The last Sheriff and Under-Sheriff LA County has had both got convicted on Federal crimes of lying, concealing, and threatening FBI agents.

We are just talking about the Permit. Now the next question would be :  Can I use that permit the same way in any state, country or city?In that case I say no,  the state or the city has an interest in restricting your ability to carry a concealed weapon and if they do not want weapons in a church or bar that is up to the local authority.  Federal land and buildings will always be subject to their own rule.  So I am not talking about full reciprocation.

But the premise is :  A common standard for training, vetting and issuing a permit will be enforced.
