House Republicans on Wednesday voted in favor of making concealed-carry permits valid across state lines, scoring a major victory for gun-rights supporters.

But similar Senate legislation still faces an uncertain future, with top Democrats and other gun-control advocates rallying in opposition on Capitol Hill.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act passed 231-198 in the GOP-controlled House, with six Democrats voting in support.

Why is reciprocity needed?  Can't each state decide for themselves what rules and processed apply for concealed carry?

Didn't the states try this with marriage licensing?

Because it is needed for CCW holders to travel and be ok. As of right now if I get a CCW in NC then I can't take that to CA and carry concealed.

Sounds logical.

To use an analogy Marriage in one State is recognised in another.

Drivers Licenses have been mentioned.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

are you equating marriage rights and concealed carry permits?

Up until SCOTUS weighed in marriage was clearly in the purview of the states.  This is actually more clear-cut given the 2nd Amendment and all.

Inversely, if the standards for concealed carry permits in  North Carolina do not meet the standards in California, then the residents of California are being subjected to NC Laws.

There are no increased standards in CA at all. What's weird is the standards here in CA change by the county you are in which is upsurd.

The same reason it is needed with a driver’s license.  Interstate travel.

The Commerce clause  governs interstate commerce  and does not mention the right to carry a concealed.   Laws governing driving in another state are covered by compact that covers most states and Canadian provinces, you cannot have an infraction in California if you are a driver with an NC license if NC does not have that law.  Those compacts also have a National Data Register  that shares your infractions, crimes, duis etc.

Alabama and other states keep concealed carry data confidential.  How will  Georgia even be able to confirm the validity of that permit if they go across the border?

yes, because NC and California both signed a compact honoring each other's laws.

edit:

And what about other state licenses?  If you are a doctor in Illinois you do not necessarily have the right to practice medicine in Indiana.

In Colorado you have something that looks like a DL, just show that.

Keep it simple.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

AL and GA already have reciprocity.   In fact, most states have it, just not with every state.  Look at a reciprocity map and see how silly it currently is.

(Just making up states here as an example)

You can have AL CCW permit, and have reciprocity with MI,  but not all states in between share that,  so you could be illegal going between those states.

Or... You could have GA CCW, and have reciprocity with OK, but not AR.  But have AR CCW,  and have reciprocity with both GA and OK.
