Seems similar to what we did in Berlin during the Cold War. We had a mission there but it wasn't our West Germany embassy.

 

Even the US is listed there...so we have already had a mission. We are just wanting to make it our official embassy.

Also, I'm pretty good at geography and history. I don't recall any State called Palestine. Palestine was a British mandate. Israel declared independence in 1948. Whoever stayed in (Arabs included) became Israeli citizens. Other people left thinking the State would be destroyed. They were wrong, too bad.

One little difference: the capital of West Germany was Bonn, not West Berlin.

The capital of Israel is Jerusalem.

And who's bullying who? A bunch of crooks telling two sovereign nations where their capital city should be and where they should have their embassy.

Israel is a sovereign nation. Israel decides what its Capital is, not the UN.

Israel is not 'occupying' territories. Israel won several wars (which they never started, btw) and it took those territories (for self-defense, to be noted).

West Germany had the good sense not to insist their capital was Berlin during a period of political and military tension where two groups claimed control over the city. We'll never know what America would have done if West Germany lacked that good sense and insisted on keeping Berlin as their capitol. With the USSR as an opponent I doubt we would have been so "brave" as we are acting now. It's easy to be the bully when you don't have anyone standing up to you.

 

Israel took Jerusalem by force and made it their capitol. Despite tensions and aggressions preceding it, I think you'll find Israel started the 6 day war. They took Jerusalem by military force and it remains to this day a clear point of contention and issue in the peace process. Israel knows it. The USA knows it. Everyone knows it.

 

The UN recognises that this decision does not contribute to a plan for peace and only makes things more difficult. While it is non-binding they still reserve the right to make their opinion known.

It didn't work? We'll see in the future. The silver lining of having a douchebag as President is that he will cut the US contribution to the UN. And I will proudly support that.

Germany was unified. No one else had any claim to Berlin anymore. The differences are quite obvious.

Just because a nation is soverign doesn't mean it has the right to claim territories that are in dispute. Not all military aggressive occupations should be recognised. Like it or not, that is how Israel took Jerusalem.

 

There is a continued ongoing dispute over the control and right of Jerusalem. They are the only "soverign nation" in the world that insists on a capitol that another group (who have just as much right to "soverignty" as they do) also claim.

 

If Canada decided to name their new Capitol as Portland, Maine would we move our embassy there? As a soverign nation they reserve the right to name their capitol after all. Oh what was that? Portland isn't theirs?

 

What makes Jerusalem Israel's? Other than Israel's aggression and prior military actions?

Ah yes...just a technicality.

 

That technicality is what led to Israel thinking they can claim Jerusalem as their own. Most of the world recognises the issue isn't so black and white. Thankfully.
