Marriage on Tourist Visa?

Hello,

Im engaged to a U.S citizen and wanted some input as to what the best approach is if I was to move there and be able to work. Is it possible to enter on a tourist visa and marry? Then can I come back to Canada or do I have to stay in the US? Will I be eligible to be able to apply for a work permit once I get confirmation of receipt for my immigration application? Approx how much time should it take for me to be able to work in the US? Thanks.

You can enter on a tourist visa and marry, but then you'd have to go home. How you get access to a type of work permit, depends on what visa you choose. The timing is influenced by this as well.

So my spouse would then start the paperwork for me once I am back in Canada? I was told that once I get my finger prints taken, thats when I would be able to apply for a temporary work permit and be able to work. Is that true? Thanks.

That's how it works with Canadian immigration not US immigration, and you may be thinking about the adjustment of status, which you're currently not eligible for.  You cannot intend to visit the USA with the purpose of marrying and adjusting your status.  Again Canadian immigration allows this, but US does not.

http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide   Is the K1 visa guide for fiances.  This is the manner in which you want to go if you want to get to visa faster but green card slower.  If you don't like the idea of living apart for just over a year after marriage this is the visa for you.  This route is more expensive than the next one.

http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide1 Is the route you'd look at if you get married first and don't mind living apart for a while.  It's slower to the visa, but you get the green upon arrival with the immigrant visa.

As all interviews are conducted at the US consulate in Montreal there is no other factors to really look into.
