I've only been watching for about a week so I'm not familiar with the trends. I guess I never thought that so many cases would be incomplete!

Perpetual self deprecating sarcasm - its a way of life!

No it is not. They just need more information from you and your partner. The person probably reviewed your case got confused or something.

I think it is almost always denial. The ones I've seen with this status are all denials but maybe there are some approved ones but I don't see why they'd update this instead of "case was approved". So most likely yes, it is a denial. Is it yours? :(

No, it's not mine, just makes me wonder why would someone get a denial at this point, and not an RFE or something.

9 times out of 10 that is a denial.  There may be a question of bona fide relationship.

Maybe there was something in their background history or a big lack of essential evidence..Not sure why but most people get a notice of intent to deny which is like a more serious RFE. I guess it must be something serious for a case to get denied.

Some here think that is a way for them to kick the can down the road, so to speak.  Many RFEs are asking for copies of files that were already part of the original petition.
