You are wrong you are dealing with other Governments you are dealing with the USA and what they deam and see to married is what they see and can refuse you the K1 because of engagement party.

I'm not wrong, Dear. I have seen many people with the engagement ceremony pictures got approved, traveled to USA, got married, got their AOS and still living happily ever after!

@purplepink is getting her approval soon and I see her adjusting the status!

and from another perspective:  my sister got approved without ANY of that... so i think it depends on the adjudicator...

Where they even consider ceremony or no ceremony is at the Interview stage.

But we saw from one of the same sex couples in May that actually was in a formal domestic partnership that USCIS issued an RFE to provide evidence that they weren't married.  Not really sure how they proved that since, that is a marriage equivalent. But regardless, if that is the concern, just issue the RFE and be done with it.

The only flat out denials that I've seen from April and May were for those that didn't meet the basic qualifications for K1: 1) petitioner was not a USC (only had a green card), 2) had not met in person.

Side note, we didn't have an engagement party so shouldn't be an issue on ours.

Not true!

They understand cultures and religions.

You can even apply for K1 Visa if you haven't met the person...ever... If there are religious or cultural restrictions that prohibit it.

There are certain requirements for filing K1 visa and 1 main one is to meet within 2 years from filing I think you need to research more.

U.S. Immigration law states that “if it is established that compliance would result in extreme hardship to the petitioner or that compliance would violate strict and long-established customs of the K-1 beneficiary’s foreign culture or social practice, as where marriages are traditionally arranged by the parents of the contracting parties and the prospective bride and groom are prohibited from meeting subsequent to the arrangement and prior to the wedding day.”

It's a special waiver..

It happens, but I think it's rarer now compared to the 80s and 90s.

Haha.

Same!

We dated for year, got engaged, waited 5 months before applying for the VISA.

In the year and half, we traveled about 5-6 times, each of us and several more after we applied.

No kids, no previous marriage.

Same age. Same cultural background. Same religion.

Pictures of our engagement party - like 70 people from both sides.

Just insane.

I wish they would just reject us already if we are headed that way.

The wait is more torturous.

They're not gonna reject you! Curious though how large was your packet ?

@purplepink's statement "You can even apply for K1 Visa if you haven't met the person...ever... If there are religious or cultural restrictions that prohibit it.  " is correct. I saw this too when I was filling out the form.

Didn't do a party. Took my mum to a Toby Carvery (a wonderous place where they serve roast dinners here in the UK).Told her over lunch 3 days after it happened.

She was upset. I didn't get the huge reaction I wanted, but then I find out it's because it's another thing my dad is not around for. He passed Nov 2008 due to medical negligence... So she was upset that I/we miss out on that.

I do have a text saying she's happy for me etc. and it's screenshot as well as printed ready to take to the embassy to show them. Got that and the Facebook announcement.

After dealing with his time in the hospital, wasn't really flush for a party.

I'm not one for huge gatherings either.

You can get a K1 if you haven't met in person but that requires a waiver which is very very hard to get now. So pretty much impossible unless it's cultural or religious reasons like you said.
