Hi all,

I've read about various experiences about getting a driver's license during the AOS largely depends on the state (and the driver licensing office), wonder what y'all might advise will happen next:

  • Crossed into Texas on a K1 Visa in August
  • Applied and received SSN in September, opened a joint bank account
  • Applied and received a TX driver's license (expires with i94 in November)
  • Married in October
  • Submitted Adjustment of Status in November
  • Took pending AOS notice along with expired DL for renewal
  • DL renewal application was sent to second verification at the licensing office and was advised to wait for next steps in the mail

One of the issues noted at the DLO was the agent was unsure of what was the expiry date for the pending application. On the initial DL application, it was clear to the agent to submit the i94 date. Also the BIG BOLD letters that the notice "did not provide any immigration benefits or status" caused the agent to have hesitation about the notice providing sufficient lawful presence.

Any thoughts on what to expect next? TIA!

Hey, I am in Houston. Applied for Texas DL with AOS application pending; the application was sent to secondary verification, too. The verification took about two weeks and my DL was issued one more week later after me passing written and driving tests. The expiration date on the DL is one year from the date of the initial application. I guess, in your case, it might be a year from the date you applied for a renewal.

Thanks, I'm hoping for a similar path.

Just an update. Everything happened as JSWH mentioned. Verification letter came back in a week, took it to Drivers Licensing Office and they processed my DL renewal with expiry a year from the date I originally applied.

No exams, I did have to surrender my license and was given a slip to write down the Canadian driver license number for my records.
