Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and a colleague linked to Russian intelligence ghostwrote an op-ed about Mr Manafort’s work around the Ukraine even as Mr Manafort faced federal charges for concealing the proceeds from that work, special counsel Robert Mueller’s office said.

As part of an investigation into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, Mr Mueller’s team has charged Mr Manafort and his associate Rick Gates with illegally concealing payments they received while working for various Ukrainian clients. Both men have denied any wrongdoing and called the charges unfounded.

According to a new court filing from Mr Mueller’s team, the legal cloud hanging over Mr Manafort has not prevented him from helping to pen an opinion piece about his Ukraine-related work.

The special counsel’s office alleged Mr Manafort was at work on the piece as recently as last week. And his coauthor, according to the new filing, “is currently based in Russia and assessed to have ties to a Russian intelligence service”.

Mr Mueller’s team characterised the op-ed as an attempt by Mr Manafort to sway public opinion around his case, which it said violated an agreement to refrain from activities that could undermine a fair trial.

Just wondering, is this illegal, or did Mueller force Manafort to give up his free speech rights?  Also, don’t legal defenses pretty much do this all the time unless specifically gagged by a judge?  Regardless, it was probably pretty stupid, but I am not sure it is illegal unless it violated the terms of his bail agreement, but I suppose since he was tied to Trump the presumption of innocence is no longer valid.

Terms of the agreement was that Manafort not do exactly what he did. Yes it violates the bail agreement. He agreed to it and didn't have to if he didn't want to. He is at risk of going to jail, and he certainly is unlikely to reduce the 'terms' of his bail that he wanted.

Can you please point out where this is specified (note, the agreement is really just the first six pages, the rest seems to be property information and appraisals)?  I thought bail agreements were to make sure the defendant would not flee a jurisdiction, but I suppose what Manafort supposedly did was so heinous he would be made to give up many other of his rights.  Again, I am not arguing if his actions were smart, just wondering if they were violating an agreement?

The gag order agreement in the case which was in place November 8th. Manafort has until Thursday to show cause as to why his actions do not violate it. Last week they had begun to agree to modify the terms of the bail. Last night the SP filed a motion that would reject the terms of the modification to Manafort's bail as punishment. Actions have consequences and he very well will be held in contempt of court for violating the order.

I hadn’t heard about a gag order in addition to the bail agreement.  In that case, I find my question answered.  Thanks.
