just curious, will he have to get his medical done right when he gets the packet 3 or is it not until the packet 4 comes? I was just reading through some medical threads and a lot of people mention that packet 4 contains all of that info.

Also, do all countries test for the same things, i.e. HIV, etc. or does it vary?

Thanks!

He will get the medical exam/xray info with the packet 3. Packet 4 isn't really a "packet" it's simply a notice of the interview date. He will have xrays and blood tests for HIV and Hep. I don't know about any other countries and honestly, I could give a ####### since Egypt is the country I was dealing with.

They all test for HIV and tuberculosis and a couple of other things, but the medical is indeed tailored to the circumstances of each particular country.

For instance, some countries have a very effective mandatory vaccination program for all school-age children -- so shots would have already been received for certain diseases. Other countries are not so reliable. Also, certain countries are notorious for particular contagious diseases, so doctors will check for that there -- but not in countries where there hasn't been a case in a certain number of years.

So the consulate-approved physicians have a checklist made specifically for that country, and they have to check off each item on that list. Your husband may have to get a shot or two. Also, if he's travelled to a country at risk for something (something that's not a problem in Egypt) it might mean an additional test or shot.

There is also questioning about mental health and drug use, but I do not think they do drug screening- only question.

I thought that Michael guy a while back said that they did a blood drug test? He was going through Cairo. Maybe that's different depending on the country too.

Has anyone had anything pop up at the medical, like they found out their SO had some horrible disease? I honestly think this will have been his first physical in YEARS!!! Not that I think there's anything wrong with him but geez louise I've had two family members die within the past month so now I"m paranoid I think!

I know Ammar wasn't in Egypt, but since we just did this 2 weeks ago I'[ll tell you what happened to him in Jordan.

First, he had a chest X-ray (worst method for checking for TB ever BTW! But whatever!), a urine test, and a blood test. The urine was a tox-screen and the blood was to check for things like syphillis, HIV, etc.

Then he had a second appointment to deal with immunizations. Jordan has mandatory immunizations for school and he had all of them except the Influenzas (Hb and A? I think? Anyway) and the pneumovac. The basic deal was he also had absolutely no record of this and the schools informed him they burn their records every 3 years. So what he did is go to the hospital and see a doctor friend, who basically wrote up a paper and certified that he had received all of his vaccinations BY NAME and DATE (most of these like polio, etc all have a date when you get them that is standard like 24 months, etc so they basically estimated). he brought this paper to the exam in Amman and they accepted it and only made him get the 3 vaccinations.

It's like the US-- you KNOW the kid had to have the vaccinations to even attend school in teh first place, so the fact he went is proof he had them at some point. They just wanted something official to slip in the file.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Why are you concerned about a drug test?

My husband hadn't had a physical in years and he was fine.

I'm not concerned about a drug test. She said that they didn't do them so I was trying to clarify exactly what tests are going to be done.

My aunt never went to the doctor most of her life and found out she had cancer just a few months ago and died last week so I guess I"m just a wee bit nervous. :)

I know what you mean. I don't even think I have my records from my pediatrition if I had to prove it myself either! I mean who keeps that stuff unless you've been going to the same doctor your whole life.
