Yes we did. I have a note from a neuro psych explaining my condition we presented to him. I have also presented this letter other times for other interviews. But anyway it shouldn't be necessary to disclose as i have a right to an interpreter either with or without a disability, correct?

Anyway thank you for your input and your response.

As I recall, there is a question when you set up your appointment whether you have a disability that you need them to accommodate. If it’s important enough to present a letter then I would have thought that you should have filled this in.  I’m still not seeing any connection between this disability and the need for an interpreter though. And quite frankly - having now done a fair amount of reading on this - I believe that if it was important enough to need an interpreter, you would have done all this reading too, and you would have seen enough (some has been quoted before in this thread) to make you realize that bringing your wife for that role was questionable - irrespective of what the eventual outcome or reasoning was.

We did not set up the appointment but were just sent a letter to appear. Where would you "fill this in"?

I guess part of what I’m battling to understand about this is what motivation the officer has to engage in such apparent misconduct , there is only downside for him unless he can show good cause.

Ok, fair point.  Did you do all the reading on the official site about unbiased and impartial interpreter before deciding to take your wife in that role? And you showed the neuro’s note to the officer before the interview as a reason for needing an interpreter and he still turned you down, initially, before changing his mind later?

It looks like you actually can contact the office beforehand in case you have a disability. I just looked this up. But this was not on my mind because I assumed that is  mentioned on the paper regardless. I honestly was just surprised when he refused me because this is the first time that happened. We should have been more forceful with him but he was being pushy and we did not know our right. Its only after I went in that my wife started to question why. And I had not done any research before hand only after we got home to understand why.

And as to why he refused initially I cannot guess on that. But this is my big question.

Anyway I'm going to take people's advice to put it to rest. Next time I will be more prepared.

If you did this interview at the Detroit Local Office, then good luck speaking to a manager who will actually address whatever you concern you send/submit.  If you do on the other hand, then tell the manager to fire the light skinned female officer at the window who keeps blinking her eyes and makes faces (there is only one).

My advise though is to let it go.  It's not worth it and life is not fair.  I personally have been to the Detroit USCIS office 3 times and twice I had bad experiences.  I worked for the government for a good time and trust me there is nothing you can do to have a government employee fired/suspended unless they sexually harassed you and it's on camera.  Even then, they will most likely ask them to retire

I have a diagnosed learning disability so that's why I was nervous. And again I was within my rights to request an interpreter. If the rule is that you can only have an interpreter based on your level of English then the rules should say that. But no where does it say that, or if you have found where it says that please quote.

If your learning disability is so severe as to limit your ability to communicate, you risk becoming a public charge.  That is a significant issue.
