Social Security Number for Children

Both children have US Birth certificates via consular birth abroad.  This was a while ago however, and i cannot recall if I received a SSN for the kids which is required prior to enrolling them in school.  The Toronto US Consulate no longer takes applications for SSN.  Any ideas as to how can determine if my kids were in fact, given a SSN?  If they haven't, how do I apply for it abroad?

I would start by loooking on social security website. Contact them and see if they can locate the kids socials.

You don't need SSN to enroll the kids in school. I highly recommend you do not give them their socials. Schools are notoriously bad at keeping that information private. They often have volunteers enroll kids and even high school kids get access to those numbers.

Federal law says you do not need SS number for children to enroll them in school

each district will have its own rules to prove child lives in the district

but you do need their SS number to claim them on IRS tax returns / i believe you can apply for these at time of filing but don't take my word on this
