Hello All -

My fiance is arriving in the US tonight!!!! WooHoo! I'm just trying to get things in order for what comes next and I have several questions for anyone with the time to help:

Do we fill out the I-485? We aren't getting married until June 1 so do we need to wait for the marraige certificate to file for an adjustment?

Am I correct in understanding that she can apply for a SSN number right off the bat with a copy of her I-94?

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find clear and concise instructions for how we need to proceed?

Thanks so much for any help!

Oops - been busy, I need to update our timeline...will do.

That's great about your fiance arriving, you must be so excited!! I sure Know the feeling. You need to wait until you are married before you file for the AOS because they do require you marriage certificate. I'm not sure about the SSN number. Here are the guidlines that you can follow with information on how to adjust your status http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=k1k3aos I hope that helps.

Best of luck!!

Yes, you need a certified copy of the marriage certificate to do pretty much everything after.

Andre was not allowed to get his social security number until he had his green card in hand.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

Annie got her SSN right away.

But, you must wait for the Marriage Cert prior to continuing. You may want to read through the guides and start compiling your evidence so that will be the only document you need.

I applied for my SSN 2 weeks after I arrived. It's a good thing to wait about 2 - 3 weeks to ensure that your fiance is in the system that they access to verify her immigrant status. I already had my marriage certificate by that point so I got my SSN in my married name. You can either have her go and get a SSN in her maiden name after 2 wks, or you can wait until you have a marriage certificate in-hand so she can change her name right away (if she chooses to change her name!). Key is to apply for the SSN no later than 76 days into your K1...otherwise they won't give it to you.

My husband got his SSN around 2 weeks afterward, too. Like Jashley820 said, you have to give them time to get his name in the system before they'll be able to issue it.

Until you have your marriage certificate, you can't mail any of this off, but it's definitely worth starting to gather as soon as possible. Get all the required information in the next month, then fill out all the forms and send it off right after you get married. The guide here is amazing, so definitely use that as a tool to make sure you have included everything.

Congratulations and good luck!

What a nice thing to say. It is always good to remember that people here are honestly trying to help others.

Tita and I got married first then applied for social security card with her married name. You might check with your local jurisdiction to verify you can marry someone without a social security number. We live in Mecklenburg County NC and they REQUIRE both parties to have SS#. So we went to Cobb County Georgia and they only require the husband to have one. So we saved a step (the name change at Social Security)

As for other things you might start thinking about, the establishment of joint accounts, joint leases, joint utility bills, join a church together, etc.

Good luck on your journey.
