I'm eligible to file for citizenship in January, and will be filing online. I intend to go into Texas law enforcement, and US citizenship is a requirement to become a licensed peace officer in the state of Texas.

What I have noticed from perusing a few police officer employment application forms is that many of them ask for a "certified copy of your naturalisation certificate", and indicate that a photocopy isn't acceptable. I had thought that such a thing as a certified copy of a naturalisation certificate didn't exist, but the almighty Google led me to this: https://my.uscis.gov/helpcenter/article/how-can-i-obtain-a-certified-copy-of-my-naturalization-certificate

So I guess it can be done at an Infopass appointment. Has anyone actually done this? I assume they would verify your status in SAVE, and then simply authenticate the photocopy you bring them in some way (I'd be bringing 10-15, so the officer will no doubt be very happy to help me out).

As it happens, I'm a Texas notary, and no, I don't think this would be possible. Texas notaries aren't permitted to make certified copies of recordable instruments, such as birth certificates. I would think naturalisation certificates would also be considered recordable documents.

If I hadn't run into that link from USCIS I would probably agree with you, but if that process exists, then I suspect that's the one that should be used for this circumstance.

All I can add is when my former spouse went to his ceremony he was told to keep his certificate in a safe place as there was no way to obtain a replacement.

No there is, it's just expensive. $555

You're right, you can't photocopy the naturalization certificate. I learned that after sending off a copy to Department of State to get it apostilled (renouncing original citizenship). Since I'm overseas I couldn't just do an Infopass - Instead used a certified copy of my US passport bio page.

As much as I want to be a police officer, I'm not paying $555 to every agency I apply to.

Guess I'll go the certified copy route at the time and see how that goes.

Didn't notice that it's now just a month until I can apply. Time flies...

I don't think it is necessary for many government jobs. Definitely not for many state and local government jobs, which generally don't require citizenship. And in the four fed gov't jobs I've had, I don't recall ever having to provide proof I was a US citizen. I assume they're able to confirm that info when doing the background check.
