A dog stepped on a 12-gauge shotgun causing bird shot pellets to hit a man hunting in southwestern Wright County Wednesday.

William Rancourt, 36, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, was nearly 22 yards away when a hunting dog stepped on the trigger guard of a shotgun lying on the ground causing it to discharge, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Rancourt was hit in the back and sustained injuries considered non-life threatening, but still "fairly moderate," said Ken Lonneman, a DNR conservation officer.

It's not the dog's fault.

 

It's the fault of whomever put the gun down without taking the proper safety precautions. If there was a safety, then use it. If not, don't set it down with the chamber loaded.

 

People far far more knowledgeable about shotguns than me can elaborate more on the safety mechanisms and safety procedures, but even as a naive person regarding gun safety, it seems like it was a stupid move to put a loaded gun down on the ground.

This is another great example where someone should lose their license to carry the firearm, due to demonstrating unsafe practices.

    Man's best friend. I give the dog full credit for just firing a warning shot, and hopefully teaching the irresponsible owner learned a lesson that he should have already known.

I think you are missing the fact that no one is early blaming the dog.

Probably could not happen in Colorado, Dog would have to pass a background check before being allowed to use a gun.

If the gun was placed on the ground by another member of the hunting party, would you advocate pressing charges against him for some form of negligence? 

 

Rather than make jokes about the dog I think this should highlight how some people who own firearms need better training on how to properly handle the weapons. Hopefully whoever placed it on the ground loses their license.

You should never leave a loaded gun in such a situation, with or without a safety on.

That sounds very reasonable.

 

So the guy who did it, whether it was the man injured or someone else, should be penalized for doing so since it led to bodily harm. 

 

Is there a system of 'refractions' for gun license carriers when they are shown to be unfit to carry the weapon? Like a points system? Having to go through a training course or something?
