Yup, yup, and yup. Celebrations or stress, I eat with em all. :( Quitting smoking? Initially I gained 10 pounds, then packed on another 10. :( I had lost 10 previous to that, (keeping up???:P )and I lost 5 since, so I'm only up about 5 from what I used to be.....but that was way too much to begin with. I lost 50 pounds in about 4 months a few years ago, but had put 35 or more back on in the last couple of years...and it does stink to gain it back let me tell ya!! I've determined that this is already a great successful year for me in so many things, that why not make it weight-wise too....so I've been making some changes. I feel some better and I hope to be looking better by the end of summer too. We'll see. M.

I caught myself doing this about a month ago, I had gained about 5lbs and I freaked out. I know that's not much on the grand scheme of things, but I am very obsessed with my weight (in a good way I think). I lost 150lbs 5 years ago, and I don't ever want to regain weight. I've found that if I get addicted to the muscle pain of working out, it's a new fixation. Almost as rewarding as sitting down with a bag of chips :P Below is a recipe that I came up with when I wanted chocolate pie desperately, but when I saw it was 500+ calories a slice I thought, surely I can do better than that :P

Fat Free/Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Instant Pudding (2 boxes)

2 cups fat free milk

1 tub of sugar free whipped cream

(the worst part - honestly sometimes i don't even use a pie crust! it's good enough) Ready Made graham cracker pie crust

Mix the pudding with the milk, it'll be really thick, cut it into half, put half of the whipped cream into one half of the pudding mix, put the thick dark chocolate pudding mix on the pie crust, plop the mousse-y pudding/whipped cream combination on top of that, and then put the rest of the whipped cream on top of that. It is so good, fills you up after a few bites, and is so rich you won't be running back for more for a while. Sometimes I add a teaspoon of natural peanut butter to the whipped cream that is left for a different taste.

I'm also a mash potato freak, but when my hubby's not here, I make mash cauliflower instead, it's just as creamy and filling but has a naturally buttery taste when it's mashed.

I dunno if any of this will help but I sympathise. I'm still trying to lose weight myself. Maybe some day I'll get down to 120!

We just started dieting together almost 2 weeks ago. Rey has already lost like 6 pounds. It's so not fair.

I hate food. I love food. I hate food.

PS Did anyone see that article in the NYTimes last week about weight loss? It's an excerpt from a book and it suggested that when people who have been overweight all their lives get to a normal weight, their bodies react in a way that a normal body would react to starvation. Their appetites increase and their metabolisms slow down by like 24% or something. It really isn't fair to them.

I think the biggest set up for failure is when for example, you are craving ice cream but then force yourself to eat steamed broccoli as an alternative.

That made me laugh out loud.

Yeah, that definitely does not work. I've found that the only way to control my own weight is to stop thinking about dieting or losing weight. Any attempt at controlling my diet completely backfires and I end up fixating on food and wanting it. I've gotten to the point where I don't think about food or my weight, and that in turn prevents me from overeating. I'm not so sure this approach would work for everyone, but for me, it's all in my head...

Argh, my hubby does that too .... we start dieting together and he loses a ton of weight right away while I struggle to lose a few pounds. Damn him!!!!

I had done really good up to our formal wedding on April 21 .... eating healthy, working out every day .... but it all went to hell in a handbasket after the wedding when my MIL was hospitalized for a week. We ate fast food or other restaurant food nearly every meal and of course I went for the comfort foods :)

I am trying to get back on track now.

didn't see the article...but thats totally my story. i've been up and down and up and down. and for a few years now i've maintained my weight but its slowly creeping back up. i need to stop it now (about 15lbs, UGH) before i become a real fatty. i'm the same. i love food. i hate food. i love everything about food. cooking. reading. restaurants. street food. :( there's so much yummy food here in nyc!

i truly believe that the metabolism problem is me. i practically starve myself and workout like crazy and i barely lose weight. some people it just falls off of. lately i know my problem though. i haven't been working out because of a back/hip problem. so a pound here a pound there ... here is 15lbs. :help:

This is that article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/08/health/0...&ei=5087%0A

I hope it doesn't depress anyone. :) My weight fluctuated wildly earlier in my life, but I had it under control for a good 5 or 6 years. Then I met Rey and it's been shot to hell since then. He cooks well and doesn't pay attention much to waht he eats. Plus the emotional rollercoaster of almost a year apart... etc etc it's just getting back to normal now but I feel like a HOUSE.

Well, it's not something that applies to people who go through a divorce and gain 100 pounds after being somewhere around normal their whole lives. It's about people who have been overweight since childhood and probably obese. It suggests that the bodies of those people want to be overweight (due to a genetic glitch or something) instead of normal weight. In the article they also discuss how adopted obese people's weights matched their birth parents' far more than their adoptive parents', which suggests there is a great deal of genetics at play.

Clearly everyone has some choice in the matter. In my family most everyone is thin except some old people, but they work their arses off for it. The minute any woman in my family quits exercising and eating like a bird, they gain a LOT of weight. So they are predisposed to be fat (given the right amount of food is around, which in our country it is), but they can work to be thin. It's not as easy as the average person has it, though, and their bodies don't say "stop gaining weight" after only 15-20 pounds like many people. It's more like after 100. The exception is my mom who does not gain more than 15 lbs and wants to lose it, but she struggles with her weight too. Sorry if that's TMI about my personal life. :)

Yep. I think most of us who've battled with our weight are fighting against heredity in that way. People who've never had a weight problem might think that's just an excuse but each person's metabolism is different. On the positive side, there are many supplements that can really help shore up those who are hindered by heredity.

If you don't have a copy already, Dr. Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible is a great resource for what supplements you can take, or what foods will actually help you to metabolize fat.
