Ok I know I have so many questions. Can someone tell me is a lawyer necessary? A lawyer contacted me from a inquiry that I did online I met with them and was suppose to get a free consult but then the lawyer told me that I absolutely needed a lawyer. The fee is $4000. I just want to know if anyone knows what exactly are they doing because I put my own packet together and it seems that I am still responsible for all the fees. I don’t need to pay them to mail my information off. They have been very unprofessional in my opinion because I haven’t heard from them since August after numerous attempts at text, calls and emails. They just reached it a couple of days ago because they received a letter about my case. Well I received the same letter and had already mailed back the evidence that USCIS requested

Did you contract with them?  If they are getting notices about your case it sounds like they are.  If you have an attorney you shouldn't send anything in that they haven't seen.

The other question is why you think you need one.  What kind of visa?  What are the potential problems specific to your case?

Unless you have a really complicated case then you don't need a lawyer at all. Just save the money and use this site.

They get the same notices I get. I only inquired about a lawyer because I didn’t know anything about applying for the Fiance visa. They ask me to come in and meet for a “free consultation” that ended up with me swiping my credit card. But I’m going to write a letter that I no longer need their services because $4000 is a bit steep for me to basically do all the work and pay other fees. Their not doing much but reviewing and mailing the papers off

It sounds like they may be a bit shady.  They had to have put their name on something designating them as your representative to get the notices from USCIS, and they swiped your card.  It sounds like they made themselves your lawyer.  After it's approved is when you assign a representative.  Make sure it's clear they are not to do that, because I think it's impossible to undo.

@Tasha Smith you can do this process yourself..Please do not give this lawyer $4000.00 dollars of your money unless a complicated case as one stated...Just get all your knowledge from this site and you will be fine...Have questions, just ask but save your money..

Did they say what it was for when they swiped it and has anything gone onto your card. You can contact your bank to report a fraudulent use if you didn’t authorize the amount that comes up on the card but the fact that you handed the card over might count against you.

Based on your time-line you filed for a K-1 Visa and they received a letter which means they are legally representing you for which they charged you presumably a $4000 retainer.  While your case might have some complications the fact that you apparently received an RFE (request for Evidence) early in the process means that there may have been omissions or oversight that perhaps with due diligence on the part of the lawyer or yourself could have been avoided.  You replied to the RFE so you should dig out the agreement you should have signed with the lawyer and see what your options are for discontinuing your lawyers representation of you.  For sure you will not get all $4000 back but you should be able to get some of the $4000 back unless it was a fixed price type of contract.   Even so as a gesture of good will they should refund some of your money.  The fact that you received an RFE (depending on the details and how avoidable it might have been) might justify going to the state bar association if the lawyer decides that they don't want to offer you anything.

They are many many people on this site who are more than willing to contribute time and effort in helping you and the guides on how to do a K-1 present a step by step process..  However, looking at your profile it appears that you have had a few 'bumps' in the road already and already have experienced how good the people on this site can be.

The lawyer doesn't seem to be helping you and you've chosen to respond to the RFE on your own which means you should terminate your lawyer's representation of you if you are not going to trust your lawyer to handle the case and RFEs.
