I'm also not a representative for all Americans, so it wouldn't really make sense if I did.

I think someone who is supposed to represent this huge great melting pot should be able to balance his personal beliefs (Christianity) with an acceptance and recognition of the multicultural beliefs that are present in the US.

I'm fine with the White House being decorated for Christmas, as it is the faith that the President holds and ultimately the White House is his Residence. If we ever did have a President of a religion other than Christianity, I would expect him/her to decorate the White House according to his/her own faith.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting these "Holiday Cards" but I feel like they are intended to be the President and his family wishing all Americans well during this season. To me that shouldn't be exclusively applied to Christmas.

Now in reality, after googling a bit, it seems like these "Holiday Cards" are actually just sent out to a select number of people, and from what I can tell they tend to be political supporters. In addition - A copy of the card is on display somewhere in the White House for visitors to see.

Now I find the card "on display" in the White House a tad insensitive. I imagine there are plenty of American Citizens that visit the White House while on vacation in DC that aren't Christian. The way the card is presented, even if it doesn't physically get mailed to every citizen I get the impression that at least the one on display is intended to be "for" all Americans. That is just my opinion though. For those whom it doesn't apply, I could see it reminding them of their difference from the President, and perhaps make them feel like second class citizens. Though I think the feeling of "second class citizenry" for being of a different faith is unfortunately far too common in the USA regardless of what the President does.

As for the cards that are physically mailed out - Are all of his supporters Christian? I imagine the vast majority are. For those who aren't I wonder if they are sending out a different card, or will his Jewish supporters (and other faiths, if he has any) receive the same "Merry Christmas" card? If so, I find that a bit insensitive. I am sending Merry Christmas cards out to family and friends whom I know celebrate Christmas. I'm not sending them to my Indian friends if I know they don't celebrate, and my wife doesn't send them to her Thai friends etc... I'm not sending one to my best man who is Jewish. I'll be sending him a "Happy Chanukah" card.

If you send it to someone you know doesn't celebrate Christmas....

It pretty much is. Always has been. Not just insensitive. Also tacky.

(If not insensitive, then just ignorant)

Why would you send someone a Christmas card if you know they don't celebrate Christmas? That's a car crash waiting to happen man.

We really reached a point in America, when the president finds a card celebrating anything other than Christmas so offensive he needs to make a point of it with his base.

It's technically worse.

"Happy Holidays" doesn't celebrate "Anything other than Christmas". It merely celebrates Christmas PLUS other holidays that tend to fall around the same time.

*Cue angry mob*

seriously, how insensitive. the war on christmas has been raging on for years. did you not see the op? barrack 'christian-self-identifier" obama sent out cards that read 'happy holidays' with no mention of the christ in christmas whatsoever.

People are freaked out over nothing. If I  got a happy Ramadan card from somebody, I would think, that was thoughtful of them to remember me.

I am sure if Obumer had done something in the white House for Ramadan,  none of you would freak out.

Do none of you MDL exchange gifts and so forth.

I have not set foot in a church in years and we got a tree etc.

Do you have to believe in ghosts etc to celebrate Halloween. I am pretty sure no one over 6 believes in the Easter bunny, yet.

The subject of the op is not that Christmas is back. Christmas was never out. The subject is all other festivities are out.

I'm not going to wrap up a gift in Christmas themed paper and mail it to my friend who is Jewish with a card that says "Merry Christmas" on it...If I send him a gift I will try to get it to him before the beginning of Chanukah and write an appropriate card, to the best of my ability. THAT is how you show that you are "thoughtful".

Do you send Fourth of July cards to friends who aren't American? Do you wish them Happy Thanksgiving?

It really isn't hard to be conscious about these things. It is pretty easy to strike a...middle...ground. You know?  Celebrate Christmas appropriately, if that is what you do, while still respecting others and what they celebrate. That seems like the way to approach this issue from the middle. If you want to send one generic card to everyone, a good "catch all" is "Happy Holidays". That seems quite appropriate for someone like the President who may want to send a happy sentiment to everyone in the country. If you only have Christian friends, then by all means send out a generic "Merry Christmas card". If you have friends that are from multiple faiths, figure it out and act appropriately. It's not hard. If you really don't know, they are probably not that good of friends in the first place and maybe you don't need to send them a card.

the irony being that all other festivities were never really in to begin with, we were just being polite. this has always been a christian nation posing as a secular, all-inclusive nation. that's my take, i'll revisit my opinion when america will accept anything other than a christian potus.

(and catholics are christian so no one go all jfk on me).

my aunt is jewish and my cousins were raised jewish and catholic and back when i used to send out xmas cards - i made sure to buy a box that said happy holidays or warm wishes for a wonderful holiday season or something non religious. i always thought i did that because i'm totally non-religious but really, my momma just raised me right - to be considerate of others. deliberately sending out a xmas card to a non christian household is like having a bumper sticker that says my god is bigger than your god - but i guess that's just where america and it's angry little handed president are at right now
