Do we need to get our wedding certificate validated at Italian Consulate in California

Question is for anyone who married their Italian significant other in the United States or who knows Italian law:

My fiancé and I will be getting married in 24 days, two days after he arrives arrives in California for his 4 week visit.

He was researching today and read that Italians who marry a non-Italian citizen abroad have to send through post (or bring in person) their marriage certificate to the Consulate (for us, San Francisco Consulate General) to get "certified" and translated, and then the Consulate will send the marriage certificate to Italy.

I have never heard this before in my life. I just wanted to know what other Italians have done after marrying their SO in America. I always believed once we got married, it was all clear to start the petition.

Thank you!

I was curious and did some reading and it looks like this process is to have you recognized as a spouse in Italy should you need any services or benefits there.  I don't think the US visa depends on doing this.  Someone may correct me, but I think that is done separately and you file for the US visa as usual.

That would be correct.  Any Italy specific procedure has nothing to do with immigrating to the US after a marriage in the US.  Married is married.  This procedure is about getting the US Citizen Italian Government benefits not the other way around.

This is not a necessary part for US immigration papers. We didn't register our marriage with Italy until about a year after he came here to the US via a CR1. We only did it because I plan to apply for Italian citizenship to move there eventually.

Awesome thanks so much for the info!! He seems to think it's a big risk if we don't register the marriage in Italy ASAP, so it's good to know we have some time!

Like others have said, registering the marriage in Italy have nothing to do with the US immigration process. However, your spouse may want to check the rules of Italy as several European countries have laws stating that marriages by their citizens must be registered in the country.
