Affidavit of Support; Line 22 or Line 37 of 1040?

Hi,

 

my sponsor was employed overseas and had non us income for 2015 and 2016 (re entry permit).

In 2016, she established her US business and had a small loss from it but no sales. She still had her normal W2 income from overseas.

In 2017, she will have enough income to sponsor without joint sponsor.

 

I read that line 22 of the 1040 should be used for employment based income while, line 37 should be used for self employed.

I assume to use line 22 for the year 2015. In the year 2016, she had a little loss from her business in addition to W2. I assume to use

line 37 here, as she has submitted schedule C. In 2017, I would also use line 37, as all of her income is from a US based business and no W2 income 

will be reported. Can someone confirm this please?

However, the instruction to the Affidavit of Support say following:

 

"For purposes of this affidavit, the line for Total Income on IRS Forms 1040 and 1040A will be considered when determining income. For persons filing IRS Form 1040 EZ, the line for adjusted gross income will be considered"

 

This would mean, no matter if self employed or not, you would always list line 22.
