Getting married in US after arriving on a CR1/IR1?

Hello,

 

So my wife and I are almost at the end of our visa journey, and we are starting to think about our plans once we are together in the US. We were married in Kuwait as that is where we met and lived for a while, however once she is in the US, we are considering going to the County Clerk in my local county so that we can formally get married in the US and also so that my family can see us get married.

 

Would getting married in the US have any impact on future immigration procedures (such as naturalization?) or are we free to do this if we want to?

You guys are already married. You can't get married again unless uou divorce each other.

I think you may want to renew vows infront of family and friends. You don't necessarily need to go to a court house for that. You could book a nice chapel or have an intimate back yard celebration. Just my two cents.

immigration will accept your marriage in kuwait

 

if you had a civil marriage in that country, you are already formally married

 

you don't need to marry here

Married is married.  You can have any kind of party or ceremony you want except a "legal marriage" which you already have.  To get a marriage license in any US State, you would have to sign a statement indicating you are free to marry, which (as already married) you are not.

You can actually marry someone again you are already married to in some states.

 

In Texas, for example, you can do this.

  Some people have a ceremony called renewal of vows.  It looks like a wedding minus the licence.

sorry but many people renew their marriage vows / sometimes to celebrate an anniversary/ it is not illegal and can be done at county clerk office in most states

there is nothing wrong with doing your vows again and again

Hypnos, you beat me too. Yes, in some states, such as Texas, you can actually go to the county clerk and get a marriage license to marry, even though you’re already married. It’s exactly the same process as you do the first time getting married. You just have to sign a paper to say that you’re already married to each other.

no, it is totally legal to go thru the marriage ceremony several times 

our friends do it (in NY state) each year in a church with a pastor to celebrate their anniversary

In some states, but not all, you can legally marry the same person more than once, that is true.

And in any state that allows for marrying the same person as often as you like, you are STILL already married and will acknowledge that fact when obtaining the license.
