Ok, what do you guys think....my husband and his sister have NEVERRRRRRRRRRR done anything special for their mum for Mothering Sunday. :( My husband says she wouldn't want anything...but I ask you, what mum doesn't like just SOME acknowledgement that they are a great mum? I don't want to get anything if it's never been done, and I know she would never expect something, but I just can't help feeling bad. I would never NOT doing some sort of something for MY mum. hmmmmm :unsure: Hubster says that maybe it's just his family, but they've only ever celebrated birthdays...not anniversaries, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, etc. Is this just them, or do UK'ers just celebrate less. I know they like going to the pub.......LOLOL

In the UK these "dates" are treated differently

Birthdays - everyone celebrates :dance::dance:

Anniversaries - rarely acknowledged until you get to 25th 40th 50th and beyond

Valentines Day - is purely for lovers (or would be lovers) totally blew my mind the US tradition of kids sending em to all their class and grandparents sending them to kids etc. etc

Mothers Day - usually celebrated with card & flowers

Easter - no cards just big choc CADBURYS :dance::dance: eggs for children

Fathers Days - card but not quite as big as mothers day

Christmas -the biggest of em all pressies and cards for all

LifeacrossthePond

Removing Conditions (here we go again)

July 30th USPS delivered

Aug 22nd check cashed

Aug 23rd I797C received - case been transferred to California

well I always send my mum a card on Mothers Day but as a whole we don't take much notice of 'special days' , easter etc...christmas day is as good as it gets in our family :lol: Luckily my SO is pretty much the same....our birthdays are a day apart so we decide where we are going to go for a few days and that is our 'present'...we don't even do cards.... :blush:

Couldn't have put it better myself Widge - I would agree with you 100%! I am surprised that Frances' hubby got away with not doing mothers day! It is a tradition that has been around a lot longer than the USA Hallmark cards' version!!! I remember as a kid going to church on mothering sunday and being given a bunch of violets to give to our mums.

It's interesting, cuz this is how we've always done it.

Birthdays - everyone celebrates :dance::dance:

Anniversaries - always celebrated my folks anniversary, gift....they've taken us out for ours, gift, etc. Also have celebrated other people's anniversaries

Valentines Day - Always give and get something for mum (but we are close), and sometimes others

Mothers Day - gift or take out and card

Easter - mum has always made me an Easter basket of sorts, I've always at least given card but make a basket usually now for folks and one for hubster

Fathers Days - never celebrated (was awkward to start when I was 14 and my mum & stepfather married)

Halloween and Thanksgiving - cards

Christmas -the biggest of em all pressies and cards for all

Yep, UK'ers celebrate less...

I am surprised that Frances' hubby got away with not doing mothers day! It is a tradition that has been around a lot longer than the USA Hallmark cards' version!!! I remember as a kid going to church on mothering sunday and being given a bunch of violets to give to our mums.

Maybe church is part of it too...and since hubster's family isn't religious...well there you go. I guess I'm more surprised that as a mother herself, his sister doesn't do anything at all...like how hard is it to invite mum over for a nice dinner if you don't want to give cards, gifts, or flowers.

Everything has been around a lot longer in the UK than the US Annelizabeth... but if you guys DO buy cards...well you are falling for the trap just as much as we are...hehehe ;)

We used to cook Mam breakfast in bed and she wasn't allowed to lift a hand all day. Dad would have flowers delivered to her and they'd head out themselves that night...to get a break from us I imagine :D

I got an email from InterFlora reminding me of Mother's Day in the UK, so I figured I had better get the flowers ordered for my MIL. I read the email a bit too quickly, guess the requests needed to be made by the 16th, but I sent her the flowers on the 16th! :blush: Ooops, Mum got her flowers 10 days early :blush: Guess thats what happens when the American daughter in law is the one left to remember! Said she thought they were lovely, don't think she is used to getting flowers much with having 2 sons.

My husband definitely thinks the americans over celebrate everything! In Scotland they seem to celebrate every holiday by ending up at the local pub :D That is the one thing he misses the most since moving here.

So you just give your money to a pub instead of the florist/card company...LOL Hubster would agree with that brand of money management... :lol:
