Credit cards are different from the visa.    If you want to use your spouse's credit, you may first need an ITIN.  But you will get that when you file your joint tax return.

Thank   you

You can apply as soon as you have a SSN. But you might not get approved if you have no US credit history. (They don't care about your credit from your home country - it's like you only started to exist once you entered the US.) A lot of new immigrants have to start with a secured credit card with a low limit.

My husband is an authorized signor on my account, he didn't need an SSN for it.  It doesn't help him get credit though.  But if you need a card and your spouse has one, you can do that today.

Thanks  for  the  info

I got my husband on my account as an authorized user. he has his own card. They needed his passport number. When the SSN came we updated it on the account.

How do you know it doesn't work? I understood that it reports for him too and as soon as he has a SSN it creates a credit file.

Was this on your bank account?  If he was added to the account on either your bank or credit card, then it's different than having permission to use the card only.  Mine doesn't have has ss# yet so he can use the card but it's my account only (he got his visa but is two weeks away from coming over).  It sounds like you have a joint account, which does show on his credit history as well.

Its an actual American Express credit card. I want to help him build credit.

Yes that is the best situation.  I may have misunderstood the OP, as the visa may not be marriage based.  I was thinking of it for someone who didn't have a SS# yet and/or someone not yet here in the US.
