SSA taking too long with corrected SS card from Marriage.

After a troubling process, (all that k1 visa stuff.) my now Wife and I are just waiting for her corrected social security card to come back in the mail. Problem here is, we applied for correction that on October 27th (We were married on Oct. 24th) and here we are on November 21st and still nothing in the mail. 

 

We went to the office and applied in person (we had no choice, per our county's rules) both times; to get the card upon arrival and to correct it after marriage. It didn't take too long to get the first card; why is it taking a bit longer for just a Corrected card? 

 

Also, can we apply for AOS if we already got married and informed the social security office, but not yet received the corrected social security card?

I can't really speak to why the new card is taking so long, but it's possible that it's going through manual verification, which can take 6 weeks or so. My wife had to try 3 times to get them to agree to issuing a new card in her married name. The 3rd time we used the I-485's NOA1 to help show the name change with DHS...although many others had no issue and others yet had to wait until they got an EAD. It's not consistent from office to office.

 

You can apply for AOS without the updated card, or even with no card ever issued. Use the desired (i.e. married) name, and list the maiden name under other names used.

I got married in October 24th and went into my SSA office on October 27th as well. I still have yet received my new card. Recently did a change of address, I think I submitted my paper work for that a week before hand (early October) since I moved to a new apartment in September. I have also submitted an email asking what's going in with my card a week ago as well. Overall no word on my SSN card. Sadly need it to change my name on all my documents since my last name is the female version of my husband's.

 

I wonder if they are having issues.... Since it shouldn't be taking this long. 

 

Also I made sure my new address was right, and had the apartment manager look over the paperwork since I didnt get the card yet. My apartment manager knows what's going on with my husband's status etc.

Yes, it sounds like they're having some kind of issue with processing anything. I called the SSA yester day to see what's going on, but they told me that it was under DHS approval. The SS card was 'Pending' which is really strange considering we got her original card literally 2 weeks after we applied for it. I was planning to look into trying to find a way to contact the DHS to see what the hold up is.

Since I have last posted I made sure my current address for maiden last name was good, and went to the post office to see what I had to do.  Added my last name and added my husband’s full name to the mail box.  I do not know if this has happened to you yet....

 

But I went this morning to the SS Office on my day off, right as they opened up, saw a staff member with in 20 mins, and then he gave me the news of that my ids mismatched and I was forced to go to the Department of licensing. I was to come back with the plastic id matching my information. Wrote his last name on my paperwork from October and told me come right in and skip the lines to get seen right away when that day happens.....  This whole time I’m freaking out because I have no official id and I have been carrying this piece of paper with my marriage certificate with me everywhere. And I really want to get my passport so the hubby and I can plan our honeymoon in a 3^rd country.

 

I just got back home after leaving my apartment at 8 am till now (4:32pm) dealing with my new ID and the SS office.

 

At the DOL, the 1st person told me why I went to the SS office in the 1st place. And he said that my last names better match or he won’t be able to help me, (almost started to cry) They wanted me to take my husband’s male version of his last name, when my husband and I agreed for me to take the female version.  (His last name + a) Each person in this new 3 step process at the DOL kept telling me no to female and yes to the male. On our marriage certificate there is no place to list what my new last name would be. So I have been crying throughout the day, and so upset. After waiting nearly 2 hours after my pictures was taken, of course taken after I started crying, (also a 1 hour long wait from getting a number printed out and talking to a human to finally be place into a queue.) I was finally called to the last stage, the lady had told me they had no clue where my paperwork was, I guess they were looking for the marriage certificate, proof of my new address, and old id with maiden last name, and old social security card, I had these documents with me the whole entire time, no one kept the papers I had supplied. Since my license is special, which allows me to go up to Canada without a passport etc. I guess I was to have my birth certificate, I don't recall seeing it on their site about needing it. Some stupid reason I didn't think about it. Had to rush home via bus and take an Uber back, I don't own a car, trying to save money so when hubby is back from Russia so we have enough money to get him a nice car for work etc. The lady kept asking me where this 'A' is coming from etc. So I guess she had to call someone or something.... but long story short..... Spent whole day for a different spelling in my last name when it’s different from my husbands which my id should state now his lastname + a. All we were doing was following his cultural rules (language etc.)  They kept asking me why his last name had no A, I replied with “He is not female why would he get it? It would have been misspelled”

 

 

I’m glad my family understood how important to me to have my last name like this since the hubby and I are trying to mix our two cultures together our own way. I know with me having the A might cause some conflicts in the future, but hopefully we could just show documents for proof etc.

Hopefully you were able to get a new SSC. I just received mine this afternoon, it was requested on the 19th and created on the 22nd. 

 

I was starting to get really worried since recently the post person left all the mailboxes unlocked over the holiday weekend and my apartment manager is sending in a complaint to the post office about how careless the person was.

Nothing yet. Apparently the SSA gave my wife a number to call the DHS about this matter and of of course, she was met with an automated system. She did say something about it giving required documents to her within 10 days, but I'll call them myself.
