dual citizenship

Hello

I'm not sure at all where I should post this, so I thought the Canada forum would be the best. My daughter is in the States on a CR1 visa since June/06. She is the Canadian citizen and her husband the US citizen. They just had a baby and she wanted to get dual citizenship for him. Since he was born in the States, she would like him to also have his Canadian citizenship. How does she go about doing that? Thank you!

ps If this post doesn't belong here, just throw it to wherever it belongs or if anyone knows of a website she could go to to find out, feel free to mention it :)

You could always try the forum labled US Citizenship... (I guess it's not *that* obvious...)

:)

The links to the sites you need are also in the pinned post of that forum.

Thank you for your answers. Karin and Otto, thanks for the link. I will show my daughter and she can check it out.

Meauxna, since the baby was born in the States, I assumed it would automatically make him a US Citizen. That's why I didn't think of posting on the US Citizenship forum. I just wanted to know if there was anything special my daughter had to do to also have my grandson be a Canadian Citizen. :)

Take care :)

yeah, I realised that as I was posting.. that it's not too clear the way the forum is named. It's just that most of the dual citz info ends up in there (here). Would you prefer your thread be back in the Canada forum? I'm sorry if I moved it incorrectly.

The child is a Canadian Citizen. The birth should be registered with a Canadian consulate and an application made for a citizenship document. If you were born in Canada, and your daughter was born in Canada then the child should be sure to get a non-expiring certificate of Citizenship. This is the link you need.

Edit :-) Oh look, I have a flag :-)

I was born in the US to Canadian parents. My parents registered me and I still have the old yellow papers. I needed them recently to get a passport and citizenship certificate. If I dodn't have those papers I would have had a lot of explaining to do. The citizenship certificate process from outside Canada takes a year to complete and you need to make an appointment at a Canadian consulate to do the paperwork.
