I'd say writing her a nice thank you note for being so helpful and telling her you're referring her to other people (and then doing it) is enough...

In all the years I've bought and sold homes I have never given an agent a gift. They get a pretty hefty commision.

In fact, when buying a home the agents I've had have given Me the gift as in a Fruitbasket or Garden Dish or Rose bush or bottle of wine etc....

Not customary to give a gift.. .

But if you feel like you should due to the friendship you both have established before hand.. then that would be a nice touch. a small plant? or hey any trinket brought back from the trip from India?

I brought back some nice carved Elephants... and a dozen or so beautiful carved wood letter openers... that i use as gifts for my clients..

As far as my agent.. first one. from the house i am in now... shortly after we moved in she send a rather large floral arrangement/plant combo. we did nothing .. When re-fi.. happened to be a clients wife that is in business.. she sent even nicer.. basket with lots of goodies.. chocolates plant along with a gift cert for a restraunt. ... ERum.. for a gift from myself.??? well. umm.. Gave her husband.. my client .. his weekly massage for free..... said she could have but she wished it for her husband..

it's their job to sell me a house. i don't give the grocery store clerk a gift for selling me food, i don't see why i should give a gift to someone who is just doing their job.

If I paid almost a million dollars to end up with this house. My real estate agent wouldn't get squat.

Where's our resident real estate agent, lisaD?! She would probably give some good ideas from an agents point of view!

Hahahha...dunno how I missed this thread completely!

I gotta say...and if I'm getting this wrong, then I apologise....there seems to be this huge misconception that we as realtors® make 'too much money'......just because the selling firm might get x%....that does not usually go to just the agent (and if it does in some places, lemme know where that is!!!)...as a realtor® , yesI get a cut of that money....which then I get desk fees deducted from, admin fees, lawyer fees, etc...Then when I actually get a check - I have to put money aside to pay my own taxes (with no employer contributions) , my own health insurance (I'm classed as my own business & don't get group health), board dues, mls dues, gas, continuing education, etc etc.....then I have to put some away in case sales are slow the next month.

By no means am I twisting about it, but there is a huge cost to doing business in real estate that ppl don't factor in, or don't even know about....the typical agent makes 30 grand a year...that is by no means rolling in it......I love my job & wouldn't do anything else & be this happy....but things aren't always what they seem...most realtors® bust their asses to keep their customers happy & to make that sale...and if you look at it by $$$ per hr....well there would be a great amount who are getting below minimum wage!!!

That being said, Stina, I think you made the right decision concerning the gift...a note is a great gift to get....I usually give out gifts at closing, not take them...I would be most happy if my customers were so happy that they passed my card along to a friend of theirs...that says everything.

that's odd that she didn't leave you a gift ... both houses i've bought the realtor 'snuck' in and left a bottle of wine and ficus tree, respectively.

live and learn! ah well ... you got the best part of the deal!!! your very own house with your husband!!
