I'm confused. Don't these boys have money? What's the point of shoplifting?

I don't have numbers on it but I'd venture to guess that most cases of shoplifting aren't because people have an absolute need and inability to acquire the object.

Based on how the father responded to the situation you can tell that at least the Ball kid has not be raised with any proper sense of "right" and "wrong". But of course that doesn't matter. He's a good basketball player (I guess he is? I have no idea).

Oh yeah. You should search about LaVar. Dude has been trolling NBA greats for a while. He even claimed he could take Michael Jordan on one-on-one. It all started with his eldest son Lonzo (now playing for LA Lakers) but he has two more coming up. Unfortunately, Ball family will be in the picture for a while.

Great, now I have to do homework...thanks abi

But seriously, sounds much like a nutjob and the next male Khardasian clan.
Jordan will eat him alive.

People think that way but they must not be making any cash during their NCAA careers. NCAA is pretty strict about these issues. It is the coaches and schools that make the big bucks but not the athletes.

I hardly know anything about the 3 players but from how the media is treating the Ball kid it seems like he would likely have no problem affording a pair of LV sunglasses.

But as I said before - Being able to afford or not afford a piece of merchandise really doesn't matter in this situation. If they couldn't afford the sunglasses, it still would have been wrong. It is also quite common for adolescents to steal things that they could have purchased in the first place.

"In trouble"? Perhaps you take these forums more seriously than I do. Oh I'm trembling in my shoes.

I just try to apply a fair and balanced approach. The President made a kind gesture helping young kids who made stupid decisions in a foreign country. Thanking him would have been the polite thing to do, but they were not required to do so. The President didn't need to then complain about them not thanking him. Their father, when asked, should have politely acknowledged the President's help. However he wasn't required to do so either. The President, subsequently, should not have then complained and claimed he should have left the kids in jail.

"Unfair" as it may be, we should be holding a President to a hire standard than some one-time basketball player/father of upcoming basketball players, or the young kids themselves. He is the President. It's sad that this distinction even needs to be made, but it is coming up again and again in the last year. Somebody else can tweet childish things, the President should hold himself to a higher standard.

I thought the response by Trump was not about getting some form of formal thank you, but rather because the father minimized any role Trump may have played in the matter.  Given the nature of the crime and the country it occurred in, the father should not have done this.  Should Trump have responded, probably not, but I thin we all know that if someone attacks Trump he fights back.

I agree, the father runs elite BBall camps for college/pro prep, and I doubt he is doing it for charity.  The oldest son plays for the Lakers so he must be making some money.  The story I read is that the current Ball at UCLA is a marginal college player, but the youngest son is getting a lot of attention.

I was including Trump's original complaint/tweet about how the boys should have publicly thanked him in this whole interaction. I forget his exact wording. I do wonder if it played a roll in how the father responded to the question about Trump.

I definitely agree the father inappropriately minimized the trouble his son was in, and likely minimized Trump's role in the matter (Would they have been let out anyway? I have no idea). Even if Trump speaking to the President didn't change the outcome, the fact that the President spoke on your son's behalf shouldn't be treated disrespectfully. He didn't have to bring it up himself if he didn't want to, but when asked he should have acknowledged it and moved on.

If you have money in the family the NCAA cannot impact that.

I thought that all occurred after the father did his thing.  If I am wrong then please correct me.  If not, then I know if it were me, I would be sending a thank you given the seriousness of the issue, but of course I was brought up differently, I actually send thank you's for job interviews.

No they cannot. But I heard from ex-pro athletes whose kids get NCAA scholarships, family visits their son/daughter; takes the kid and his/her teammates to an expensive restaurant for dinner; depending on how often this happens that could be an issue.

Certainly the media reporting has made it seem like the tweet to the kids themselves came first.

Just looked it up:

November 14th - The kids return to the USA

November 15th - Trump tweets "Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for 10 years in jail!"

November 15th (same day) - The kids were in a press conference and thanked Trump (technically 2 of them said him by name, the other said something like "The US government"

November 17th - LaVar Ball interview with ESPN

November 19th - Trump's tweet about keeping them in China

Trump didn't even give them a day before he preemptively gave attitude on twitter, doubting they would recognize him for his help. It was pretty immature and may have irked the dad a bit. Though I'm only speculating.

So the kids did essentially say thank you, so I think this is all about the actions of the father and Trump's response.  In this one, I agree with Trump, if the father doesn't think Trump or Xi didn't do anything to help these kids, they shouldn't have and they should have let the Chinese criminal justice system take over.  Kids might have grown up really fast.

Ya they did, and they may have done it without Trump tweeting before their news conference.

It was presumptuous and immature for Trump to complain less than 24 hours after they returned to the USA about whether or not they would thank him. It also made him look incredibly desperate. He must have such a busy life worrying about whether some college students will say his name.
