What exactly are you referring to???

Your profile lacks data such as immigration status, and visa type applied for, you did post this to K-1 forum, are you adjusting status from K-1 to get green card after marriage?

K-1s can apply for the number within 75 days after arriving on the K-1 visa. SEE: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

I'm told that to invite my friend to visit me in usa that within the "letter of invitation" i send to her i must include my Social security number. Is this a requirement of the Embassy for her to receive her B-2 visa?

I would hope not. It sounds like a really good way to encourage identity theft however.

The SSN is not needed on the letter, or be sent to the sponsored individual for any reason. Which embassy or country are we talking about?

Sometimes they may need an I-134 from the sponsor, and that may have a copy of tax returns attached to it, and in that case most Embassies will accept it being sent directly to the Embassy by the sponsor naming who the I-134 is being sent to them for, they will keep it confidential.

If you are asking about getting a SSN it can be done as part of the DS230 part 2. There is a section on the form that you can fill out I believe that it is question 33 and 34. You can contact the Social Sercurity site to find out more.

K1 petitioners do not receive a SS# as part of the process. You can fill in the boxes but it won't work.

The OP was asking about letter of sponsorship to bring a friend over on a B-2 visa, some consulates and Embassies want one before issuing a visitors visa (B-2), especially from countries like China, and South America. This is not an immigrant case or K-1, just a visitor's visa.
