Hello,

Is it necessary (compulsory) to change the spouse name after marriage?

Does it affect during Naturalization interview if spouse has not change the name after marriage?

Thanx to all

of course,it's totally personal choice whether or not change name through marriage or naturalization, both of which are the common legal way to change name.

and changing name (for any reason, including marriage ) before N400 application only affects the background check process . If you are already about to interview, you are in good shape.

i changed my name through court order in the U.S. before filing N400, and i know for sure this will cause the delay, but that's part of my life i chose. so just face it.

why would it ?

  1. no one has to change their name in marriage anymore
  2. one man i know (both Americians) uses  her last name and hypenated it
  3. changing it only requires taking the mariage licence to ss office and changing ss card and at license bureau if driving license is issued
  4. other than that if a USC is the woman in the marriage and wants to change last name,  need to inform all places of credit like bank, cc cards,  (so many places i did not change mine)
  5. a woman bene basically only has to start using the name of USC if she wants and thru marriage certificate apply for SS card, etc
  6. as for the Woman in this relationship (if she is the USC, schools and teachers like it when she doesn't change her last name when remarried and having children as it makes it a lot easier for them dealing with any children of a former marriage)
  7. sorry, sometimes i ramble and i hope this makes sense

I got married in 2015, never changed my name after the marriage - had N-400 Interview in October 2017 - The officer at the interview made me change my name - she said it is my legal name and if I ever intend to use it, this is the time to change it for free and in a clean manner- She said if I refused to change it and later on changed my mind, I would have to change the Naturalization Certificate etc..... So I changed the name....She also attached to my certificate the Change of Name Petition to Court which was signed by the judge.

It was a good decision, as it made me move my wheels on the name change front - Hubby is very happy needless to say :D
