I am sad because i cannot find a better paying job. My current job pays $10/hr, others at work says no raise for at least 3 years and that too they will raise only like 25 cents. I do love what i do taking care of elderly dementia patients but at the same time i wish they paid better money and be appreciated. This is a very hard job, you give your everything but still the family members are never happy and they complain all time. Even for small things like saying that we dont know how to brush their hair and it should be done in certain way etc.  Some of the patients are very combative , they will never let you touch them but you have to get help and make sure they are clean, because most times when we check they are covered in feces or urine and you cant leave them like that. We need like 2 or 3 people to help around but not all the time the others are there to help  because they need to take care of their side too and these patients will kick you , slap you , spit on you, scratch your hands or face, they will scream so loud to make it sound as though we are hitting them. You go through this everyday and hear only complaints is sad. Also with this kind of pay, its hard to survive, I hardly make over $1200 pr month. There is rent plus other expenses. And our off days keeps changing that makes it harder to find another job or something. I have done bachelor of arts in home country but that is of no use here. My age is 36 i want to make a better career for myself. Is there any job that will give training for short duration and pays at least around $15 or more. I did nanny job for little time but there is no future in it, also they need your own transportation . Housekeeping job they ask you for experience which i dont have. My friend suggested i lie to recruiters that i have experience in housekeeping back in my home country. I tried but then i felt very nervous to lie and then i told the recruiter i am sorry i dont have any experience in housekeeping and told her that i am a fast learner if they teach me i will learn everything. I am hardworking person but she said sorry and couldn't help me.  I dont know how to drive so that also makes it difficult to get good job because they need your own transportation. I am reading the book to go for learners permit. Also sometimes i feel so lost and lonely. I go to work come come back to room cook eat and sleep and do household chores and work work.  I lost my husband few years back. I wish i had a better paying job and someone to share my life with.  I hardly go out so there is no chance for me to meet anyone. I dont want to die alone without anybody around.I dont think i can have kids now that i am close to 40 years but would be nice if i meet a nice man who cares and loves. At work most of my colleagues are African girls like ethiopia, nigeria, somalia etc  and they speak in their own language..I eat at work alone by myself everyday. I dont have any friends. I tried to look in some dating sites  most of them on these sites are African Americans and sorry i dont mean to be rude but i dont feel attracted towards them. And the others are looking to sleep around or not serious etc . Sometimes i think of meeting someone from home country  and marry and bring here but then i dont make that kind of money to sponsor and also that fear is there that what if he marry to come to us etc.  I am just sharing here because i dont have any friends to talk with. Hopefully things get better. Any advice  on career or meeting someone or how to live less stressful life is appreciated.

Hey, I I'm sorry you feel so lonely, that must feel horrible...I don't know what country you're from but is it possible to find a community with similar background? I know that you can find Meetup groups online.

If you are religious maybe joining a church, synagogue, temple , mosque etc?

Also for carreer opportunities, look up your local University or college, they usually have job fairs. Or any other job fair through websites like eventbrite.com

You sound very unhappy with your isolation, difficult low salary job, lack of transportation situation, lack of opportunity, lack of social life, lack of romantic life, so what is keeping you here? Have you thought about returning to your home country again?

Each city has a chamber of commerce. Find it.

Once you find it - talk with the secretary - tell her you want a schedule of events and let her know you'd like to attend.

Then - go in person to the Chamber of Commerce Office - talk with the President of the Chamber, tell him/her you want to volunteer at several of their events.

Attendees at chamber events are business owners and sales geeks, all looking for new business.  It usually is an informal-enough gathering where you can approach people and talk with them.

Now, the cool thing about being a volunteer there - is that you will be talking to everyone at least once - you might be at the reception table, you might be at the greeters table, you might help to run the audio/video system - whatever - but - the point is that you can meet everyone there, face to face.

Attend 2 or 3 of these, and folk remember you. When folk remember you, they will remember you are seeking employment and will consider you, because you're just not some name on a piece of paper - they met you at a chamber event and know that you were volunteering, helping out the chamber.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck!

PS - live in a really small town? go to the biggest town that's within 15 miles of your house.

Thank you for the replies. I am not every time in that very sad mood. I have not given up hope yet. So I dont have any plans of returning to live in home country as of now. I will continue to keep trying to improve my situation career wise and otherwise.  I did meet one guy in the dating site hes a nice guy.divorced but has kid, he told me only on 2nd time meeting that hes in army. We met like 3 times and the last time together he brought his 8 year old daughter and we watched movie together. It was fun. But then he got deployed to Afghanistan. He'll be back next year. I think i miss him. Its hard to keep in touch because of his work. He will text and then disappear for long time and it continues like that.I dont know if i should wait or not. Anyway,  hopefully things will be better. I will keep trying to find a better paying job meanwhile.

He wanted me to finish learning how to drive by the time hes back. lol.

one question on driving,  when i go for the learner's permit test at DMV in case i fail the first time, can i do the test again on same day or is there a waiting period to do it again?

Hi there.

I just moved to the US 3 months ago and sometimes feel the loneliness you mentioned. I don't have a permit to work yet so I'm stuck at home most of the time and have not made any friends here. Despite this, I still

Here are some tips based on the pain points you mentioned:

Stuck in Current Job

  • Identify the career you want because that will help you figure out where to look for the job that fits you. If you're not sure yet, take some time to think about it. I found this workbook about intentionally designing your life. You can check this out and fill out the fields so you can be clear on what you want. It helps to see it on paper.
  • Think about a hobby or expertise you can monetize. I'm pretty sure you have a skill that you can offer through Fiverr, Craiglist, Freelancer.com, Etsy or even through opening your own website. I write a lot so I set up my own blog about my adventures which as given me sponsorships and freebies from companies. I know you have something special, too.

No Friends

  • Attend volunteering events and free meetups in your area. I usually see volunteer opportunities from organizations I follow on Twitter and Facebook. Back before #GivingTuesday happened, a lot of accounts tweeted about volunteer events. If you have a Facebook / Twitter account, that would be a nice addition to your feed.
  • Go to event websites such as EventBrite and MeetUp. They list free events so you can just RSVP and show up.

Dating

  • Online dating is a hit or a miss thing, but you can control which dating apps you use to increase the chances of meeting good men. I met my husband from OkCupid and I have intentionally avoided dating apps like Tinder because I wasn't looking for a casual relationship. That worked in my favor and I hope it works for you, too.

As for driving, I also don't know how to drive so I'll leave that up to the other members here. Don't lose hope and keep on pushing! The best is yet to come. :)

In and Out hamburger pay almost $11 per hour.

Have you ever looked into becoming a Nurse?

Registered Nurse in USA is only a 2 year degree from a community college

Licensed Practical Nurse is only a 1 year education from what I have researched.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

It sounds like you're working as a nurses aid. The pay really sucks in the US. They take on so much and get crappy pay.  I agree about going for nursing if you like what you're doing.
