Hi,

I am US citizen and my wife is in India. We have applied CR1 visa for my wife in February 2017. We are currently waiting for NVC to process our DS260 as we are being asked to wait for 11 weeks which would somewhere end in the mid of December 2017. Meanwhile my wife has resigned from her job as the process is hopefully going to take another 2-3 months or so after we hear from NVC in December. Is it possible for us to apply for work visa for my wife so that she can continue with job search soon after she joins me in US as the Greencard process would take another couple of months to get issued? If yes, what is the process to follow for the same?

The work based visa starts by having a job. A work visa is NOT to find a job.

Once she is in the US she would get a green card. That should be almost immediately once she arrives.

Yes exactly. So, even if she finds a job, is it possible for us to apply for the work permit now so that she can join the job as soon as possible?

Her stamped immigrant visa turns into the temporary green card once she's through POE. Then all she needs is the SSN.

Thanks for your response. We have already applied for SSN in our DS 260. There was a checkbox to be filled if we wanted to get our SSN.

what the other posters above are saying is that there is no need for your wife to apply for a separate work visa / permit because her green card will serve as her work authorization document. from reading some other posts on here, it seems that the green card is usually delivered soon after your wife arrives in the US.

No! She cannot be in the US without the CR1 visa

She won't find a job without being present in the US with the green card, a SSN (which can take a few weeks once she arrives to the US), a bank account, an address. Even if she tried to get a job from where she is, it will not work.

You need patience.

Well, she can be in the US if she has a tourist visa, but only to visit, not to work.

You might still have to go in person to get one, sometimes it doesn't come.

Work visas are notoriously difficult to obtain and are paid for by a company.  I would highly doubt your chances at receiving one.

She would need an Employer to file for here, and in most cases that would take longer than you will be waiting.

Don't apply for work visa, wait to complete CR1. Work visa will be definitely reject...
