There might not even be a need to label anyone as "alt left", since cookyness seems to encompass that entire hemisphere of the political spectrum.

Why would Snopes even touch this?  Labels are created and gain acceptance by usage.  If more and more people start referring to the extreme Left groups as Alt Left, then that label will start to stick.  Personally I would think the extreme Left groups would much rather like to be called Alt Left as it is more palatable then Extreme Left.

To be correct I guess we should just call the Extreme Left “Extreme Left”?   As to self labeling vs being labeled I agree.  I for one didn’t like the fact that I was labeled a deplorable.

because it's important that the alt-right self identified. 'alt left' isn't a thing and only those who buy into the whole "there's evil on both sides" (comparing nazis to antifa) use the term.

It is easy to compare Nazis to Antifa since both groups are fascist.  The difference between self-identification and being identified by outsiders is that self-identification is used for marketing purposes and does not always accurately describe the group that chooses their own name.  We could say the same thing about Democratic Socialist that choose that name for themselves to soften the socialist side of their agenda.

Yes, because they self identify with that name.  Now that the fact that it isn’t accurate has become clear.  I know I for one don’t judge books by their covers or in this case their self-identified name.

It IS simple, and very clear.  But not everyone will be able to understand it as you see it.  Many people cannot see outside the reach of their personal beliefs, and refuse to see what is right before them.  Blends right into confirmation bias,  it does.
