"On a day when many were anticipating the tradition of children donning costumes and trick-or-treating in celebration of Halloween, Americans were forced to endure what has become a sickening modern tradition: a murderous attack in a major city, followed by grief and mourning for the victims. An investigation showed that a foreign-born killer took advantage of lax and dangerous immigration laws to enter the country and perpetrate the attack in New York. Open-border advocates in politics and the media vilify those who dare suggest that the laws be changed, and the status quo prevails. This tradition needs to end immediately."

I never ceases to amaze me when I hear anti immigrant rhetoric (and conterfactual claims)  on Visa Journey, the site dedicated to supporting the legal path to immigration.

Being against open borders doesn't make someone anti-immigrant.  How is an article that posts facts "counterfactual"?  Is The Hill a legitimate news source?

A lottery program is a terrible way to pick and choose who can immigrate to America.  We should use that allotment of 50,000 visas to bring 50,000 new doctors into the country and see if that drives down the cost of health care.  Democrats tell us that foreign labor doesn't drive down wages, so let's give it a try and see what happens.

First we have to recognize their medical degrees so they can actually work as doctors. Otherwise we'll be like Canada, having the most highly educated taxi drivers in the world.

That shouldn't be a problem.  I get great health care when I'm overseas and none of the doctors are American.

The article very clearly states it is an opinion piece. It also very clearly states that the opinions belong to the author and not The Hill.

It happens to be an opinion I feel is wrong. We should encourage people to come to this country.

Doctors, engineers, scientists also apply to that lottery, albeit Trump claimed they were not the best of their countries. I personally know a few engineers that came to US with the help of DV.

I am in favor of introducing more merit based rules and change country quotas in DV but I can’t justify eliminating DV while we basically don’t care what merits the 700 thousand spouses, adult children, parents, and siblings have that we welcome each year.

The often used phrase for the DV is stupid, makes no sense.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Or we could just pressure the hospitals to open a lot more domestic residency spots (don't foreign doctors need to re-do their residency anyway?).  That would allow more medical school graduates in the United States.

My doctor aunt actually applied via the DV in the past as she had Irish citizenship.  She's not interested in moving now that she's retired, though.

I worry about imposing requirements on spouses.  There was this period in Denmark where spouses had to have points and I believe it was rescinded and for good reason.  It started to feel discriminatory and put emphasis on things that weren't really important, like for example (and this isn't the exact requirements): you had to be 24, lots of points for speaking English/German/Scandinavian language, points for a degree from a top worldwide university (like Harvard),  etc.   I'd bet the majority of people on this forum wouldn't have qualified.    Doing away with the adult children, parents, and siblings would be reasonable.  If people are so attached to their families, they should not move away from their homeland.

I wouldn't be upset with an English language exam before a visa is issued on the other hand.  English classes are readily available worldwide.

Their relationship with a U.S. citizen or LPR merits them an immigrant visa.

I can answer that question before we waste the time.

It won't.
