They are predominantly more slip faults, you are correct in that.

That is what I thought.  I am not suggesting that major earthquakes (7+) in this fault system wouldn’t result in major damage or anything like that, just that I believe that type of fault system usually isn’t capable of the big 8s and 9s.

It's in the low 8's really that is what they are predicting at the worst that the San Andreas can do. The problem so far the last couple of years is that some of the larger/shallower earthquakes are actually been going on the smaller more obscure faults.

But pretty much if there is an issue with the San Andreas fault here in SoCal is that it could sever several main arteries that SoCal needs to survive such as roads to transport goods, water from the aqueduct, communication lines. This is why we have been working on a Early Warning system like the Japanese have to help save lives. We also have been partnering with utility companies to help put sensors in these locations for more in depth coverage and it also helps them so if the big one hit they one what the damage could be in an area before they even go there.

The Japanese Early Warning systems works and gave them about 50 seconds of lead time before it actually hit them, which allowed them to get to a safer location. The vast majority of people who died from the Fukishima earthquake did not die from the earthquake at all, but the tsunami after the earthquake.
