Do I need to physically meet my fiance before we marry? We have been together online for one year. The reason I'm asking is because I'm in cancer remission and need severe umbilical hernia surgery. He's amazing and the love of my life. Can't wait to get to hug him.

yes if he is coming to the states and you plan to file for a fiance visa (k1 visa) it is a must that you visit him and it is required that you have met at least 1 time in 2 years but we here on VJ will always encourage people meet more than 1 time because of our experience but many people have online relationships but before marriage you must meet in person because some times people live double lives and it has happened to many people on VJ

The criteria for filing for a K1 visa is you have met in person within the last two years. There are FEW exceptions to this rule....from what I have read... hospitalized paraplegia and religious restrictions regarding meeting. I realize that your medical condition is fragile but unfortunately, it probably will not meet the criteria for exemption.

Sorry you need surgery, but  I'm glad you kicked cancer in the butt.

unfortunately yes, that is a requirement. Honestly, why wouldn't you want to meet before taking he very big step of marrying someone? I know you've been dating online for a year, but it is very different once you're together, in person. Like others have mentioned, if your fiance can travel to you then that is what you should do. it will be difficult or relatively easy depending on the country of origin. Filing a K1 without at least one meeting would be a waste of money and time, and depending on the country, usually more than one visit is usually advised.

Except for the most extreme cases, no.

If you can truly show that you are medically unable to meet anywhere in the world, then you can apply for a waiver. But this is an extremely rarely approved condition. You need hard proof that neither are able to meet anywhere, and to show this.  She needs proof that she can't meet you (just one US tourist visa attempt likely won't cut it), and you need proof that you can't go anywhere, even like driving to Mexico or Canada (or taking a cruise!). It's a very high bar to meet.

Unlikely.  For example, you can always meet after your surgeries take place.  My mother also beat cancer this year, she's flown to visit us and is coming again within the week.

As for anxiety, have your doctor prescribe a Xanax for travel.  That is a pretty common issue.

3/2/18  E-filed N-400 under 5 year rule

3/26/18 Biometrics

7/2019-12/2019 (Yes, 16- 21 months) Estimated time to interview MSP office.
