Bringing Electronics Through PHL Customs

I have a used flatscreen TV (8 years old) that I'd like to bring as luggage from US-Philippines. It's big and there's no way to hide it - customs will see it when I come through. Will they try to milk me for huge duties? I don't mind paying a little bit, but seriously this thing cost $500 eight years ago. Now it's probably worth $100.

Has anybody out there brought electronics through PHL customs lately? I just wouldn't want to pay more in customs duties than the item is even worth...

We all have brought electronics through customs before but I don't think anyone has brought a tv before on here. How big is the tv? How will you bring it on the plane?

It's a 37" LCD. Not huge by today's standards but too big to hide in any luggage. I would bring it as checked baggage.

Well if you are paying any oversized or extra baggage fees to the airlines I doubt the cost would be worth it for an 8 year old 37" TV.  I can't say for sure but I doubt you would pay any customs fees because it is a used tv and obviously not being brought for resale.  That's just my opinion.

If it were me I would just order a 37" TV (or bigger) on Lazada. Lazada is like Amazon in the Philippines.

lazada.com.ph

One last thing. If you do bring it make sure the voltage can be switched to 220v

I agree with RO_AH.  Just get it there from Lazada.  If they hit you for oversized fees, the new TV will probably be cheaper.  You can also try to ship it.

37" and you are hoping it is allowed in checked luggage?    "The largest checked international luggage size allowed is 62 linear (total) inches. "    And if they do allow it they will nail your for a couple hundred dollars is my thinking. Then of course you have to hope it doesn't get broke when tossed in with the rest of the luggage. ;)

2nd.  Is it dual voltage?  If not, it will require a converter.

.. buy one there.

My experience with Philippines TV is that the signals are so bad that the pictures suck anyway!!!  LOL

I am guessing that the Samsung will have a better picture though.

I stay away from the off brands for just like you said - not a very good picture.

I have bought Sony 42", Toshiba 24" and Samsung 32" in the last 3 years, picture quality is good and prices were all very comparable to U.S. prices.

Lazada is not the cheapest most times so I have found, even thought I do buy a fair amount of stuff through them.

https://www.abenson.com/tv-entertainment/46-to-50-inch.html   and there are others if you search.

I have never tried other places besides Lazada. I have placed orders and had them delivered to Bulacan in less than 24 hours. The prices there fluctuate a lot and the often email you coupon codes so you can save a lot if you wait to place your order. Also prices fluctuate a LOT on Lazada, sometimes daily. So if I am looking for something in particular I put it in my wishlist and get an email notification if the price drops. I either send money to my wifes PayPal and from mine pay with her PayPal or order COD and have her pay for it. I have ordered quite a few of their cheap off brand TV's (5) and surprisingly have never any problems with them. But I ordered a higher end LG for my wife. I will need to look into https://www.abenson.com

I pay through our BDO account many times.   But I have found it is best to shop with some things.  TVs and bigger electronics for sure as the only warranty will come through Lazada and only for a short time usually.

Abenson, Automatic Centre and a few others are pretty good for prices.  Not SM .. LoL!!
