The I-35 bridge over Town Lake in Austin was a bottleneck when I lived off Riverside Drive in the mid-1990s in the student ghetto. I shudder to think what it will look like jam-packed with Mexican trucks!

Teamsters continue to battle Mexican trucks

The plan to let Mexican trucks operate throughout the United States has prompted a war of words and legal papers between the Bush administration and Jim Hoffa, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Hoffa and his allies at the Sierra Club and Public Citizen have sued in federal court to stop the government from issuing permits to Mexican freight haulers. Their lawyers argued in court that Mexican trucks pose a danger on the roads and threaten increased human and drug smuggling.

"Dangerous trucks should not be driving all the way from Mexico to Maine and Minnesota," said Hoffa in a prepared statement. "What is it about safety and national security that George Bush doesn't understand?"

Some of the points raised by the Owner-Operator-Independent Drivers Assoc are very valid. They have to comply with a long list of safety regulations and they are monitored by the DOT. It would create unfair competition if you allow truck drivers in that are not covered by DOT's existing enforcement and monitoring systems, not to mention the increased hazard it would cause to the general public.

Granted that it is part of the NAFTA, it should still be designed to fit into the existing rules and regulations governing US truckers.

not sure the fears are warranted. i've been to mexico lately and seen a lot of trucks that looked modern and well maintained. furthermore, there is a lot of money to be made and the companies that are in favor of this would not like to see it mucked up due to preventable accidents (bad equipment and drivers for example). so they will place good trucks and drivers to handle the driving in this side of the border. sounds like good business calls to me.
