Really interesting thread. Does anyone know if an attempt to import the car at CBP can be made before getting a green card? Would like to give it a shot in Seattle, and if it doesn't work, then just sell the car back in Canada. Of course, this is assuming I need to keep the car for some time insured in BC until the green card is approved...

Thanks for any input.

OP is married - the USC spouse is free to import the car if he/she (co-)owns it. There seems to be little point doing it early, though. If the car's fairly new, has TPMS, no lien, and manufacturer will provide a compliance letter, it's trivial to import. Otherwise just sell it.

It would not be able to remain insured in BC after import.  The spouse may have to pay duty to import meanwhile importing at POE when the OP enters should be free.
