Hi all,

I was reading the K1 flow chart and the process for applying for an SSN card. Here is some background. My fiancee has previously been in the US for college on a J1 Visa and got an SSN while here. She has already been issued an SSN, so that shouldn't be an issue. I see in the guide that the SSN card for a K1 will say, "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" however her card currently says, "Valid for work only with DHS authorization". It is my understanding that DHS vs INS authorization has to do with the type of stay, with DHS being temporary. Given that a K1 has immigrant intent, we will need to get her a new SSN card that has "INS authorization" rather than "DHS authorization." Am I understanding that correctly?

Thanks!

No, mine said also, DHS she doesn't need a new card until/if she

1. Changes name

2. Gets her GC

If she down the line becomes a citizen, that's the last time she'll need to go back.

Thanks for the clarification. I found slightly different bits of info on the USCIS (mentioned both DHS and INS) and SSA (only mentioned DHS) websites so I wanted to double check.

It might be old information, of course double checking everything is really important. Dealing with immigration I might or might not have become slightly obsessive compulsive with reading fine-prints lol.

It is old information. INS was the Immigration and Naturalization Service - a part of the Department of Justice. In 2003 it was moved to the newly created Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and split into USCIS, ICE, and CBP. Older social security cards would mention "INS authorization", newer ones have "DHS authorization".

Hello,

The number which your fiancé have when she was an international is not a SSN number. DHS just treat that number as a tax number so she can work in school or under program which DHS allows her to work at most 24 hrs per week. When she gets a green card, she need to go to US Social Security Administration ( local office) to show them that she has a green card. they will remove the " Valid for work only with DHS authorization"  in the system and send her a new SSN card. Same number though. Hope this help. :)

It was a SSN when she was here as a student, and will forever be her SSN. She also doesn't need to get a new card, but she certainly can get one if she wants.
