The cheapest plan for us on the marketplace is $426 and our employers charge us both $160 per pay check... so we're going to have to go without in 2018 :( I think if you aren't able to get insurance, you can write to USCIS and explain the reasons why.

You can't live without health insurance. Imagine something happened to you. You'll be paying a lot of money. Every visit to a doctor is about 300-400 for a simple check. 426 is nothing if you're both working.

I know I can't live without health insurance but I also can't live with it. It's too expensive. I have rent and bills to pay. Thankfully it's so expensive that we'll be exempt from the penalty (over 8.13% of our household income).

Edit: 8.16% of income I mean.

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

Doesnt mean he knows anything about immigration ;) .  Last thing you need is also a huge bill from provincial health telling you that you no longer qualified and owe them oodles.  You must be a resident of a province to qualify for health care.  When you became a US resident you are no longer a Canadian one.  You are not a snowbird.

Some insurance, imho, is better than none.  When you can switch to something better then do so.  The less deductible you pay and the more choice you have, the more it costs you.  Until then, stay safe and stay healthy.

Yup  is fine.  There are other ways to co-mingle your lives than health insurance. :)

Thank you! I am little worried because rent and utilities provide by my employer so we can only show car insurances and phone bills and credit card bills..

Joint accounts, living wills, wills (wills help keep items out of probate), joint ownership on vehicles, beneficiaries on life insurance, trips taken together, photos, letters addressed to both (xmas cards for example).  You have the opportunity to expand as the time goes by.  Keep everything in a box and sort it out when it comes time to send the petition.

Everybody has to pay their bills and rent, this is not an excuse.

I don't doubt that, but in my current situation I am unable to pony up the cash required. Simple as that.

OK then don't be surprised if they bill you for a few thousand bucks just to be in the hospital for a few hours. Simple as that.

People obviously understand this when thry choose to have no insurance or insurance with a high deductible.  I have insurance and still pay $3k out of pocket before they do anything beyond preventative care.  They do lower the costs owed but I'm still paying it myself.

My deductible would be over $7k so that would happen regardless. If I get hit with cancer or a chainsaw to the face and end up with hundreds of thousands in debt, that's what payment plans are for. I cannot physically produce the money required for the cheapest premiums available to me every month and still have a place to live, food to eat, etc. I'm not eligible for subsidies or medicaid. It is what it is.

OP: No you do not have to have health insurance. Without having health insurance though a penalty will be assessed to you come tax time. That penalty will be far cheaper than a years worth of premiums, which makes it attractive to a lot of people. But still, there are plenty of persons that would like insurance but continued to be priced out of a very expensive market. If you want insurance, no you do not have to have joint insurance, but I would point out it is a nice bit of evidence, if you are weak on everything else. $250 is remarkably... blessedly cheap... as these days insurances are pushing $800+. Work plans in general offer good coverage for couples, but it is understandable if it simply cannot be afforded... as others have said... it is what it is.. and there is going to be sticker shock. Having a very cheap premium will mean your deductible will be sky high... for many that renders the usage of such plans null. I consider them fairly junk beyond needing basic care. Open enrollment only lasts to December, so you'd best make a decision soon.
