The Establishment Republicans could have nailed him with this during the primary, but they probably presumed that their anointed candidate would win.  Unfortunately for the Establishment, the voters of Alabama picked the candidate whom the voters wanted, which is unacceptable to the Establishment.  Anyone whom the Establishment can't control must be crushed.

 

The Washington Post had already endorsed the Democrat, so waiting till now to break the allegations -- a month before the election, when it's too late for the Alabama ballot to be changed -- fits the Post's goals, too.

“Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus,” Alabama state auditor Jim Ziegler told the Washington Examiner on Thursday.

Four women have told the Washington Post that Moore pursued relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was an adult. The women were between the ages of 14 and 18, while Moore was in his 30s at the time, according to the Post

2.  How does one defend one's self against such?  The timing is highly questionable (a charitable characterization).

That was a legitimate question:  How does anyone (not just Roy Moore) defend himself against such allegations?

How can innocence -- or the validity of the allegation -- be proved, especially so soon before an election?

Answer:  it can't.  It's like trying to respond to "So, Mr. ____, when did you stop beating your wife?"

Remember how Al Sharpton pushed the Tawana Brawley allegation?  How true did that turn out to be?

Remember the allegations against the Duke University lacrosse team?  How true did those turn out to be?

Is the timing that questionable though? 

 

If you look at just the election process I agree with you, regardless of whether or not it is true or not, it seems clearly planned to come out now.

 

However, if you look at it from the lens of our society in general, I wonder if the timing has more to do with the other recent public releases about high powered men and their sexual assaults? Does the post say when they spoke to the 4 women? Did they come forward just recently in the last couple of weeks?

 

It is not that surprising to me, or anyone who has cared for victims of sexual assault, to think that perhaps these women kept it quiet because he was a man in power, and felt threatened by that. The recent deluge of reports about high profile men and their subsequent ostracization (sp?) for their actions may have lent the women support and courage to speak up.

What’s to defend.  If he did it, then he should be punished.  The GOP needs to drop him immediately and do the same thing the Dems did in NJ a few years back, and Moore can then fight this in court if he didn’t do it.
