Hi,

Do I need to renew my passport after marriage, in order to travel within US? Or can i travel with my old passport and renew my passport with the name change when the AOS is done?

I want to visit my fiancé's parents in South Carolina for Christmas, but am worried I won't have enough time to renew passport before the trip.

Any help regarding this would be so appreciated. Thank you!

I think all you need to travel in the US is identification. But you should also bring your Visa information proving you are here legally in case if anything at the airport or thereafter. If the only identification you have is your passport and it's expired it's considered invalid

Thanks!

My passport expires 2022. I am only worried about the name change after the marriage, if I can travel with a passport without the new married name.

I've read on this forum.. If you travel with your new passport with your new married name but your visa docs state your maiden name, then be sure to also travel with your old passport which included your visa in it, your I-94,  your marriage certificate and your AOS application / NOA docs.

When I read your post, I knew you’d be from Scandinavia, Germany or Holland. 😊 They’re not that organized and efficient in the US.... 😂 You don’t register your new name somewhere like we do in Sweden and then have it updated everywhere automatically. In the US, if you want to use your married name you just show your ID with your old name and your marriage license/certificate and that’s it. If you want to change your name, or your address for that matter, you have to contact each company and place individually to update your information. Makes you miss our efficient Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Authority), huh?! 😝

I am the US citizen but this happens often in the US. I was told to carry my marriage certificate with me because my plane ticket won't match my new US license. I would assume it would be the same for the passport. The advice I was given was to call the airlines and see what proof they require you to carry to prove your name change is valid.

As long as you have a valid passport then you are fine, even if it's in your maiden name. Just bring your marriage license with you as well.

My German antenna reacted on that as well hahaha :D:D:D

I'll travel within the US for Christmas as well.
We will send out the AOS stuff in a while, so I have the NOA1 of it just for the case.

For domestic traveling you don't need your passport, an ID is enough. I for example will use my military ID.

If you got nothing else than your passport, just use it. But the ticket must be booked on the name in the passport.
Same for me, my SSN and the mil ID are on maiden name, since I can only change stuff after getting the GC.

I just saw the OP is flying in from Hawaii!

To all experts: I think I remember reading something about hassles traveling Hawaii or Alaska before having the AP?
Can anyone clarify?

You have a couple of options: either book the tickets under your maiden name and use your passport (with the old name on it) or book the tickets in your married name and (if you don't have any other ID yet) show your passport and your marriage certificate (to show the name change). Once you get your green card, you'll be able to use just that (or your driver's license) to travel domestically (you'll only need your passport for international travel).

Is your timeline updated?
