my kid is the same..but 15. he knows that any sense of security is faulty and can't be told otherwise. many many discussions about 'what's the point when someone can shoot you whenever' of course i'm simplifying but, teenage angst/anxiety is rough with stuff like this happening daily.

And that worries me, that kids have to carry that anxiety with them. Constantly being worried about what might happen.

My husband always says that growing up in America's 80's was totally different then growing up now. He would be gone for hours till dark. His parents wouldn't be worried cause that was very common those days.

I guess times have changed.

Times have only changed in terms of communication. The fact is that in most communities its safer growing up today than in the 1980s. We feel less safe today because we get so much more information on a daily basis.

Fair enough, I can see where knowing to much has an effect on how we perceive things.

i would dig in to it more but normally discussions involving parenting and children gets a bit heated. i can say, you can't talk an anxious child out of anxiety when neurological/ocd type factors are at play.

ADD is another tough one ... talk about a challenge.

access to constant media is one thing but mass shootings also did not occur at anywhere near the rate they do now..http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/12/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-data/

I actually enjoy the occasional unplugging from the constant news, mobile phone & internet. It's nice to shut down the constant bombardment ... even if it's only for a day.

Yet they are still a statistical rarity, whereas 1980s crime rates were not.

In 1980, the homicide rate was 10.2.  Its currently in the low 4s.

close to 500 dead by mostly handguns in one american city alone, this year. Oddly enough its not a head line

I applaud your interest. You should start a thread, post a link, make an intelligent statement, and stir the conversation away from the those who believe the gun violence issue in America can be attributed to everything and everyone under the sun, except to the very gun culture that makes gun violence possible. We're all looking forward to it.

I did something totally brave: I got rid of Facebook, feels like I stopped smoking.

The only thing I still read are the headlines of Dutch newspapers and this forum, mostly because I like to read reactions.

right, but homicide and mass shootings aren't the same thing and the 80s crime rates were concentrated to large cities.

the overload of information has to be having a heavy psychological effect on children.. like was mentioned above - the eighties had stranger danger, and remember all those satanic child sex slave rings being operated by day cares baby sitters? it was sensationalized, blown way out of proportion and often not even reality. mass shootings now are totally sensationalized and reported on nonstop (i was cringing hard last night listening to a reporter questioning a grandparent of the victim asking things like "did you ever think this sort of thing would happen in your tiny peaceful town' like just stop talking) but the reality is that mass shootings are occurring with more frequency, and it is a phenomenon other generations haven't had to deal with.  we're not dealing with it well. really at all..

gun culture?

The inanimate object that requires the action of a human being to make work?

Let's also talk about the truck culture, fertilizer culture, acid culture, knife culture, toss-off-the-building culture, mutilation culture, etc.

These all require one thing .. a human being with the intent to harm others.

A human being is the problem ... not the item selected to inflict harm.

I've seen a few studies say mass shootings have increased, whereas others say that they have remained constant (caveat on the latter - death rate has increased).
