According to TXDPS, I do qualify. I can take the course and sit on the 2-year certificate and once I get my GC, I’ll be able to file for the license.

I could also get it entirely, if I also got my hunting license but I am in no hurry so I won’t bother.

Im fine with handling a gun, I’ve been here to Texas enough times, to go out shooting and handle them. I can load, unload and clean a gun with ease.

I have no plans to purchase one soon, but to get started on the process is a win-win for me.

I have my CHL class next Sunday.

Yes, you do qualify.  Take the class, and have fun!  Shooting is an addictive hobby LOL.....

You can carry a pistol in your car or home or business in Texas, or when walking from your car or home or business. You can be her legally, illegally, resident or non resident don't really matter. No licenses needed for that.

A few years you could get a LTC (License To Carry) which was knowns as CHL (Concealed Handgun License) with out being a LPR or having a greencard, All they wanted to see at the time that you were here on a legal visa.  And TXDOT uses USCIS SAVESystem to check immigration status for handgun licenses as well as Texas Driver Licenses.........

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

You can only take a Texas carry class if you “meet the federal qualifications to purchase a handgun”, which you unfortunately don’t do in your current status. Only USCs and LPRs are legally allowed to purchase a firearm,

Actually, the law only specifies that an alien admitted under a non-immigrant visa is prohibited from purchasing a firearm - it conveniently overlooks those admitted without a visa (i.e. most Canadians and VWP) who are allowed to purchase one.

with the exception of foreign diplomats and officers from a friendly nation.

And even for OP who was admitted under a non-immigrant visa, there's an additional exception provided for those with a valid hunting license.

For anyone who cares: I took the LTC class and am just waiting on my Green Card and SSN to file it Eithne DPS. The class certificate is valid for 2 years so no problems there.

You don't need a GC or SSN to get CHL or LTC in Texas.

You can also go get a Texas Hunting Licenses if you are having any issue buying a gun from a FFL.
