For our friends in CA.  Enjoy the smaller wallet and better roads.  I wonder if CA can do anything else to encourage people to leave.

It's sad but this is not the ONLY gas tax that was voted in this year. The legislators voted in this .12 gas tax and also voted to renew the cap and trade bill that would increase it by another .50 a gallon in the next year.

There's gotta be something other than the nice weather that keeps people in California. Let me think ...... jobs!

Actually a large amount of the people that can do it that are middle class are looking to get out of the state. This state relies on people from Hollywood and the Silicon Valley to help balance the budget. The middle class is looking to get out of the state while it is importing a large amount of illegal immigrants and poor people because it gives out so many benefits to those people.

Do the roads need repaired or not? I don't see a lot of alternatives to the 0.12 cent tax if they actually need the money to fix roads. Many states have gone that route. It's not popular, but having roads collapsing underneath you is not popular either.

I don't follow Californian politics much.

Was there a reasonable alternative promoted by other legislators to fix the roads without the tax? Or was the alternative just to leave the roads the way they are?

Yes, the roads need fixing but this WILL NOT HELP AT ALL. I say this because people that follow any kind of politics here in CA know that this money will just be siphoned off and used for other things like the pension system and the choo choo train.

The state already has enough money on the books that they get from the previous gas tax that was just siphoned off for other things as well. The DOT program is mismanaged to say the least and everybody knows it here, they have enough workers and materials to do the job they just don't want to.

All of my wife's relatives live in Southern CA, mostly in inland empire/high desert area. Some have daily commute of ~100 miles (which is crazy for East Coasters to understand). I've been hearing the life is too expensive talk for years but not much action so far. I believe only one of her cousins moved out to southern OR for a while but now back to CA again. CA economy is nourishing, some will move out, others will move in.

There has been a net movement out of the state over the last half decade or so, and they do tend to be the lower income group.

I lived in California for 4 years as a student. I have a skewed perspective because afterwards I moved to Manhattan which is even worse, but looking back now that I'm in Texas...cost of living was very high there (Also I was in La Jolla which didn't help).

Yeah my coworker drives over 100 miles a day now from Palmdale to Pasadena, that is not counting driving in the mountains as well. He did that because he could only afford a house there in Palmdale while a decent house for where I live starts at $600k.  That's why I said the people that are middle class and can move are doing that now because the COL is crazy. The people that are staying usually bought their houses years ago or due to family.

The vast majority of people moving in are poor and not middle class.

Do you have a source for where the "gas tax" money ends up?

It seems like, after looking it up myself, this new tax has a clear plan as to where the money will go. Is there a source that details where the current money goes? When I looked it up, what I found was an estimated 100 million out of the 5 billion raised goes elsewhere, and the rest goes to transportation. If that is not true, what are the numbers and where did you find those numbers?

La Jolla is nice though. I am in Pasadena for the last 5 years and I am lucky because when I moved here back then we found a decent place that was cheap. We have stayed in this apt for 5 years now due to it being less than 1 1/2 miles away from work and has a good school for my kids.

Yes it was very nice. I went to med school at UCSD which was based in La Jolla. Even the housing had views of the ocean (if you were lucky).

Still nothing like NYC. I went from a 2 bedroom townhouse with an office and 2 car garage to a 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan and paid more for the apartment. Then I moved to Texas and my mortgage on our 4 bedroom house is less than the rent was on the townhouse.

Really. In the city,  not only is the cost of living that much higher, but real estate prices are astronomical as well.

How long ago was that if you don't mind me asking? I am asking that because La Jolla is blowing up right now real estate wise. It is the place to be in SD.

Also sorry I haven't got back with the facts but I will when I get to it when I get back to the office.
