Absolutely - that is the first thing you need to do - if SSA is not updated , your employer may not know you are still eligible, DMV can't verify status etc ....

 

I know because I had to change my name and had to figure out the order :

SSA

DMV

Bank and others (in my case)

 

SSA can update your status based on your extension letter -> DMV only has visibility to what SSA has done at least 48 hours prior - so basically after you go to SSA, allow a couple of days before going to the DMV...

That's news to us. Nowhere in any of the threads have we read about updating SSA upon receipt of the extension letter. 

 

How do we update SSA, logistically speaking?  Is update an option on any application at the SSA office? The SS card is already unrestricted, ie card has name/ssn/issue date only.

I've never heard of that too. I thought the next time you should go to SSA is after you get naturalization. 

 

But anyway, you can try calling your local SSA first before going.

Must be a state thing, in MD, they contacted DHS, had nothing to do with SSA.

I've had two extension letters and five stamps in this ridiculous process, and not once have I contacted SS to update them with my status, and my five drivers licenses have all been issued without issue. 

 

 

Perhaps the name change with the SS office is causing the problem as there is a mismatch on some system somewhere.

UPDATE: After our initial try (and failure) as per the original post, we tried a different DMV couple days later.

We reapplied for the DL, the Rep put all the info in the computer and it again came back "unverified" in their System. We were asked to wait some time while they contacted their Legal dept. After about 30-odd minutes, we had success. We were issued a 1-year DL that came in the mail a few days later. 

 

(Oh, on a side note, once the Rep approved us and collected the fee, she was conversing with a supervisor, who seemed to be suggesting (english was not her first language) that virginia is now issuing 8-year DLs with extension letters. When I overheard that, I asked the Rep if that was possible for us. She demurred, saying that's not true. But the next day I learned that another virginia resident got a 8-year DL with the extension letter. We feel we may have been eligible for the 8-year DL but the Rep had already processed the 1-yr DL and was reluctant to redo the whole thing).

Not virginia, but I got a five year one earlier this year with my extension stamp. Certainly an improvement on my old state which gave the stupid one year increments.

New one has the inaccurate 'temp visitor' rubbish on with the expiry date of my (then) current stamp, but the license is 5 years validity.

Won't be updating it anyhow, until either 10yr GC in hand or a citizen, whichever comes first.

Maryland is definitely issuing until the end of where the previous DL was valid if transferring from what I can tell.

The DMV is such a strange thing and very inconsistent. I happen to be at the same location as WeGuyGal and got my drivers license renewed without any issues for 8 years. Yes, I also had to wait for an hour or so so they could scan my paperwork to the HQ in Richmond. After an hour wait I was called back and was told that  I was granted 8 years DL. Even the manager/supervisor was surprised as he said that normally with the extension letter they issue only for one year. Who knows what is going on with DMV??!!

Hi there. May I ask you what city you tried extending your GC? I am in Virginia, and will need to go to the DMV with my extension letter to get a license...
