Probably they wouldn't be able to get a new GC in the new name in time... they won't issue a new green card if it's about to expire.

But, when they got married, why wasn’t it changed then?  Maybe before they did AOS?

OP said they did a legal name change just a couple months ago. So it may not have anything to do with a married name change.

At the window, we submitted the docs.. and were informed they needed to verify the validity of spouse's immigration status with their legal dept. After waiting about 30 mins, DMV got a response that Legal "needs additional time to verify". We were told we'd be contacted; the rep entered our phone number in the system and we left the DMV. 

 

Happen to anyone? The license expires in two days. What to do? 

My license was expired annd i went to dmv gave them my notice if action and expired green card , they made copies without questioning and returned my docs back , so after a week i had my 10 yrs drivers license ....

We my wife didn't have a last name prior to marriage. The embassy assigned a generic FNU as it does to all applicants in similar situations.

 

Once in the US, after things got confusing, we decided to get a name change for wife to take hubby's name. Took a few weeks for the process, then we had to change names on the SS card, passport, back accounts, etc. 

 

No AOS, we had a CR1.

Ive tried to get a driving licence a couple of times gave up in the end as every time I went my card or visa was expiring and they needed a certain amount of time on it to issue a licence. I applied for a state id and again there was a problem, they wanted bills or such in my name. This time I persevered even though I didn't have a GC (stolen). I obtained an i55i stamp. I can't help but wonder because your conditional GC is due to expire tomorrow, perhaps like my local DMV they require a stamp that has a few months on it?  Just a thought, although if that was the case surely they would tell you as they do at my DMV rather than make you wait.

Well we presented the extension letter that extends the GC for another year; that wasn't the issue yesterday.

It's something else, as their Legal dept that verifies immigration status needed time for some sort of additional verification.

I agree with this. I live in Maryland and just legally took my husband's last name last month. So a week after that I went to MVA and did the name change on my DL. My old GC still has my old name and they did not ask anything about my GC, just the name change receipt from SSA, marriage certificate and old DL. Got a new DL that valid for another 5 years. Oh, and I did this just 1.5 months before my GC expires.

 

However, the SSA did inform me to wait for at least 2 weeks or till I get the new SS card before going to MVA. Maybe the new status in not online yet? Not sure. Is the NOA with the new name or old name?

Sorry my bad, I was just looking at the date of your card and for some reason didn't add on a year. I guess I assumed you had already been waiting a year.  Any way I hope they dont keep you waiting.

NOA is with the new name. We've had the SS card with the new name over a month.

Did you update SSA with the extension letter first ? DMV relies on SSA to update the eligibility status. It usually takes 48 hours for the system at DMV to show the update.

 

If you didn't update SSA first , then DMV only sees the conditional eligibility that is set to expire / has expired.

Removing conditions, green card expired in May, moved to Maryland from California.  Went to get new Drivers licence, took a while for them to deal with Immigration, but even with expired green card, and 1 year extension letter I got a new licence that was valid (and had the star on it for Federal ID/Flying) that was valid till 2025...
