So we went to the DMV..

..to renew license with the Extension letter and expiring green card.

 

At the window, we submitted the docs.. and were informed they needed to verify the validity of spouse's immigration status with their legal dept. After waiting about 30 mins, DMV got a response that Legal "needs additional time to verify". We were told we'd be contacted; the rep entered our phone number in the system and we left the DMV. 

 

Happen to anyone? The license expires in two days. What to do?

I have had five licenses in 4.5 years, and normally they log on to the verify system and do it while you wait.

The system did go down once and I had to go back the next day to complete it (and of course, the next day the payment system went down instead  ) but it normally takes a few mins tops.

it happened to when i was adjusting my K1. (Even thought, i had paperwork such as employment authorization, NOA1 etc. ) They said they would call me. they never did. when i visited them after a few months, they said they had not heard from the immigration yet.

Luckly i  received my GC  meanwhile. And visited them again, I asked them again. they said same thing they were waiting for the immigration. but then i showed my GC. Then, they renewed my Driving licence. 

 

It was a DMV at CT. I hope you will not go through same experience i do.

(We did a legal name change couple months back; spouse's name on license is new; but old name on green card. Could that be the issue for delay?)

 

EDIT: The "A#s" on the Extension letter and Permanent Resident card match.

We honestly don't expect to hear from their Legal, I'd be surprised if they call.

Check if you can renew it online and avoid the hassle altogether.

 

I'd try to go back in without the supporting documents. Maybe it's a state by state issue, but we didn't have to bring in lots of paperwork for a renewal. It seemed that once you had initial proof, you could renew easily.

It's not something that cannot be done online as DMVs here need proof of legal status. And we didn't hand over any extra supporting docs, just the expiring license and the renewal application. They asked for the GC.. and then the extension letter. 

 

DMV does not issue any identification document on the spot. A license is a secure document with a hologram that has to be produced and mailed, kinda like the permanent resident card.

How do we know it's manual?  The DMV Rep said verification usually takes at most 45 mins. We waited about 30.. then called to the window to be informed Legal needs additional time to verify whatever and to come back at a later date.

We took the legal name change certificate when the got the license in the first place couple months back. We don't know for sure, but the issue could be that the green card still has the old name but the extension letter has the new name.

We actually did hear back from the DMV in CT after they consulted legal... about using the stamp in the passport as a I-551.   Went back in later that week and finished up the paperwork.  It was a pain, but honestly, they just don't have enough training in it.

Same as NY where it comes in the mail in two weeks and you have a very unofficial piece of paper in the interim...but unlike NJ who issue it on the spot.

 

Perhaps they tried to use the SAVE system which wasn't playing ball so then decided to take it manually, which as noted above may take ages.

 

 

Honestly, I'd just go back or to a different DMV  (I know, I know, hateful places) and try again.

Can you go back soon and hopefully get someone who is more supportive and helpful? Remember the days of calling the  NVC and USCIS when the assistance and information depended on which agent you talked to  !!! 

Well the thing is, DMV never asked for anything additional. The Rep appeared to be knowledgeable, as she was familiar with the extension document, and she seemed to consult her manager too who was walking around.

Why didn’t you change the name on the GC?
