I am seeking clarification for a friend, who will become eligible to file for citizenship in January 2018. Would appreciate any inputs on these questions-

1. My friend's mum is very sick and she is visiting back home to sort out for her care etc. She will be returning to the US in January 2018, just to file her paperwork. Can she travel back to her home country after filing her citizenship?

2. She has been in and out of the country for the last year due to her mom's health for about 4 months. Would this affect the timing of her eligibility towards citizenship filing?

Her home country is the US, if she has a green card and is applying for citizenship.

 

She needs to demonstrate five years of continuous residence in the US (or three years if applying as the spouse of a US citizen), as well as being physically present in the US for 30 months within the previous five years (or 18 months within the previous three years if applying as the spouse of a US citizen).

 

Without both of these, her application cannot be approved. Future travel may impact her eligibility, also.

(1) Yes, she is allowed to travel after filing N400, however, be aware that, she needs to go to Biometric Appointment which will happens 2-4 weeks after NOA. She needs to arrange time.

(2) It is totally depending on how many time did she spend outside US. 

Have she travelled in the last 5 years ? How long ? 

Be careful of the requirements, as Hypnos mentioned.
