But the first page of the grand jury indictment charges that “In order to hide Ukraine payments from United States authorities, from approximately 2006 through at least 2016, Manafort and Gates laundered the money through scores of United States and foreign corporations, partnerships and bank accounts.”

And Bade LLC was not only active at the upper end of that time frame, but played a direct role in the 2016 elections.

“It’s obvious that if they got the campaign money, they had something to do with the campaign,” said Jack Blum, an attorney specializing in international tax and financial secrecy laws.

Manafort, who became the Trump campaign chair in May 2016, received only about $3,000 in payments from the Trump campaign, all reimbursements for travel or meeting-related expenses. He left the campaign that August, after questions emerged about his work in Ukraine.

But Gates continued to work for the RNC through the election, with the last of the payments to Bade coming after Election Day

The payments to Bade LLC were party coordinated expenditures, which are a subset of party spending done in conjunction with candidates.

So now it is collusion with the Ukrainians?  I thought Manafort was lobbying for Ukraine to join the EU which would be the opposite view as Russia and Putin.  Either way, if Manafort and Gates, and possibly the Podesta brothers were hiding and laundering money from any foreign entity then they deserve to be prosecuted.  Lobbyist are the scourge of politics.

But it’s just as important to point out that everything in the 12-count indictment covers the period from 2006 to 2015, or before Manafort and Gates had any involvement in the fledgling Trump campaign.

Robert Mueller delivered a punch in the rapidly expanding Russia investigation by simultaneously indicting Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, two of the most prominent figures in Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

But the special counsel sent a more powerful signal to others around the president with the public release of a plea deal struck with low-level loyalist George Papadopoulos, which was full of details about the former foreign policy adviser’s email traffic to still-unnamed high-ranking campaign officials about a “request from Russia to meet Mr. Trump.”

“In unsealing it, he knows he’s sending messages to at least three or four other operatives and their lawyers that he’s got somebody in his corner who could be damaging to their interests,” said Randall Samborn, a former senior aide on the George W. Bush-era special counsel investigation into who leaked the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson.

Top White House officials including press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that despite the latest developments the Mueller probe was still moving toward a quick conclusion. But that brand of optimism ran counter to the analysis provided by several veterans from previous special counsel investigations who said they expect more targets to wind up in court.

“I’d be very surprised if it’s the last indictment we see,” said Julie Myers Wood, a former lead prosecutor during Kenneth Starr’s independent counsel investigation into President Bill Clinton.

Low energy Sanders confirmed that Manafort was in touch with Trump upto Feb this year. Gates was hanging aroundthe WH much longer. Gates will flip first.

You still think they are going to flip?  If these guys were so close to Trump while under investigation by the team of DNC lawyers Mueller put together, why didn’t they flip them already?

I think the mold has been cast.  Now whenever we have a presidential election, we should have a special prosecutor appointed immediately to review the campaign and transition teams for the entirety of their term.  Regardless of the baselessness of the accusations from those unhappy with the outcome.

The Ukraine payments were from " Party of the Regions".  I have not seen Manafort advocate an EU connection.

Manafort earned $600,000 a month from pro-Russia party: Ukrainian report

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/10/31/manafort-pro-russia-party-report/816242001/

An internal investigation in Ukraine concluded that Manafort earned larger sums than he previously reported as a political consultant in the Eastern European country.

Manafort was paid at least $28.5 million, far more than the $12.5 million reported last year, from “black money” funds run by the Party of the Regions, according to a source with knowledge about the investigation. The Party of the Regions served as the pro-Kremlin political base for Ukraine's former President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia in 2014.

Manafort's Ukraine lobbying is not pro free Ukraine. It is a pro-Putin stance that thinks Putin's desire to annex free countries and restore the USSR to it's former 'glory' is a nifty idea. As for flipping, some people need to have light arm twisting and others require waterboarding.. so to speak. But if sources are correct there are other flippers that may have been wearing wires. The best way to do it is to make it look like the guy hasn't flipped at all. Additionally there were other sealed indictments against sealed individuals yesterday on the docket as is related to this case, and there are at least 15 other sealed indictments elsewhere that we public won't get wind of until much later on.

new court papers filed on Tuesday, the special counsel's office further explained why it believed that Manafort and Gates were, and continue to be, flight risks. The government will not ask that the two men be placed in jail while the criminal case goes forward, but instead want the judge to impose "substantial" bail conditions.

"The defendants pose a risk of flight based on the serious nature of the charges, their history of deceptive and misleading conduct, the potentially significant sentences the defendants face, the strong evidence of guilt, their significant financial resources, and their foreign connections," prosecutors wrote.

Manafort and Gates are under home confinement until their next court appearance, scheduled for Nov. 2. They were allowed to self-surrender on Monday on the condition that they surrender their passports once they learned about the warrants for their arrest and notify the FBI about their movements.

The special counsel's office wrote in Tuesday's filing that Manafort's financial assets were "substantial" but also difficult to precisely tally because he had listed varying information in financial documents. In August 2016, for instance, Manafort represented the value of his assets as being $63 million and $28 million in different documents, according to the government.

In arguing for steep bail conditions, the special counsel's office noted that Manafort and Gates have significant ties abroad, and connections to Ukrainian and Russian oligarchs who previously paid them millions of dollars.

That curiosity caused a couple of security researchers to dig in and discover that Paul Manafort appeared to be fond of the James-Bond-inspired password "bond007".

Their interest was piqued in February, after Manafort confirmed to Politico that hackers broke into Manafort's daughter's iPhone. As Business Insider previously reported, hackers then published roughly 300,000 of what they said were her text messages —  about four years' worth — to the "dark web." The dark web is a secret version of the internet often used for criminal activity accessible only via a special browser.

Those messages apparently contained Manafort's former email address, uncovered by a security researcher who goes by the online name Krypt3ia. Another researcher discovered that accounts that used this same email address were compromised in two big security hacks: the 2013 Adobe hack, and the 2012 Dropbox hack.

The password hints for the Adobe account were things like "secret agent" and "James Bond." Those hints basically allowed the researchers to correctly guess that the password itself was "bond007." The same Bond-inspired password worked for both the Adobe and Dropbox accounts.
