Making sense of the "18 months extension": So I received the famous 18 months extension letter many CSC I-751 filers are receiving due to the huge delays processing their applications. It is my understanding given the wording of the letter that it extends your residency for 18 months since the expiration of your original I-551 card. Which as you know given the delays and the average time in which people receive the extension letter it had been expired for 12+ months. In view of this scenario, is this so called 18 months letter in reality simply a 6 months extension? And can we infer the conclusion in light of such short extension that all the pending applications they sent them for will be adjudicated within the next 6 months?

food for thought.

See the Current Events forum, or the pinned thread in General Immigration Discussion, for this.

--------

Personal note:  Those of us who are finished with this infernal, infuriating legal-immigration process fervently hope for progress in your case.  We might not comment, but consider us to be cheering loudly when you report good news.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Okay guys, I had my interview yesterday and thing was my experience. I get there 15 minutes before my appointment (10:45 am). I waited for 1 hour and 10- minutes, which honestly, was short because of the amount of people. My IO was very polite but very professional at the same time (not that you cannot be kind and professional at the same time, but it's important to understand that there's a line that you don't cross, like making jokes or trying to "be" his/her friend). He made a few questions in regards my full name, and date of birth, country of citizenship etc, and the quickly he went for the test. I passed no problem, after six questions he stop asking. Then, he ask me about trips, the length of those etc. I was a little bit worry because I traveled a lot, so I din't know I was close to break the physical presence rule (I found out recently about it, becasue I never tough of it, I just make sure any of my trips were longer that 6 months but the rule says that if you apply under the 3 year rule you have to be in the country at least half of the time). After that he made more questions about my job, if I was still married, about previous marriages. Then, since I never got a lawyer, I made mistakes on the form, and the point to me on a screen to read, and basically was all the things i missed. That was very nice becasue I had the chance to correct them and sign again electronically.

At then end he ask me all the questions about being loyal the US Constitution, if I was ready to defend the country and abide to the law (to which I of course answer yes to everything) and then the UNEXPECTED PART. I thought it was fine but then in the form N 652 put that "A DECISION CANNOT BE MADE YET ABOUT YOUR APPLICATION" and that the would "mail a decision". I panicked for a second but he told me that he could not because my pending I 751.  I was a little crushed but I kept nodding my head, saying okay I understand and then...when I thought that was the end, he said "you will receive the oath letter withing 30 days". I said okay but then kept thinking...hold on, that's an approval, right? So I said to him "I am sorry, I am a bit confused, so you can't make a decision on my case but you are going to send me a letter for the oath?". He said yes, and mentioned that he just needed an okay from a supervisor, and that should be resolved at some point, before I'd take my oath". I left and when I was at the parking garage, I checked the app and there it was: "you're in line for oath and will receive a letter in the next 30 days". Now, my only concern is this: could they delay that letter for months? Somebody with the same experience?

Aside from that, if somebody know I want to ask: Since when should I start counting the days for the physical presence rule? I am just thinking that if the letter is delayed for months and I need to travel internationally, I just want to make sure that I am not going to break that rule adding more days that I already have. That's why I need to know. I am still married and became LPR in Feb 2015. That means I should count the days I was out from that date until Feb 2018? Or should I count until today? I understand that I can travel between the INTERVIEW and the OATH, but when you come to the OATH you still have to report your trips....I just want to know if I have days I can use in case my letter is too delay (I'd like to travel in October). The 3 year rule says I need to be in the country for at least 18 months...can somebody expand on this and help with my question? Also, if anybody has a questions, I am happy to respond.

Good luck to everyone!

Congrats. I also passed the 400 interview, but the officer said my 751 was pending and a decision could not be made because of it. A month later, my 751 was approved, and a week after my 751 approval. My oath notice was mailed, but I think my husband's passing and the packet of me requesting to expedite the oath ceremony with tons of medical records,  dr's letters, and a strong central argument based on humanitarian ground (proving my husband's illness and why he couldn't attend the possible 751 interview)triggered the adjudication and approval. Congrats again

First off Congratulations! Secondly, DO NOT TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE US BEFORE THE OATH!

My experience was a bit similar. I went to the interview with a decision cannot be made, but the next day, I was approved for both. A week later, I had an oath date.

This was my wife's experience too. Combo interview, both apps approved verbally by IO, next day status changed to oath ceremony will be scheduled, and then a week later they gave her an oath ceremony date.
